New year, new assassin. This time, he's a pirate! (dun-dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun....) Apparently, Connor's grandpa.

A small bonus for PS3 users.

I'm all for the naval battles. They were easily the best part of AC3.

I can't wait!!I didn't like III as much as II or Brotherhood. So, I'm not sure how I feel about an all naval or mostly naval game.

Oh, I don't know. For me, the naval battles and the homestead missions were the best of AC3. Maybe they can combine both and the game will be about recruiting a first mate, navigator, cook, becoming king of pirates and- no wait. That's another story.

Anyway, release date: October 29, 2013.

No loads anywhere: seamless from land to sea, from sea to land, from above water to below. He said: "At any moment, you're going to be able to get close to the coast of an island you never saw before, dock your boat, dive in the water, walk on the beach and start discovering, all of this without any loading. This is true from sea to ground but it's also going to be true from ship to ship."

My bullshit sense is tingling. Could this really happen?

It sounds promising. I like the fact there's more naval adventuring, since that was fun in AC3. And while I'm looking forward to it, I'm a bit leery since I thought the story in AC:R was the weakest of the bunch (including AC3).

And after looking at the various pictures of Edward, I think he looks more like Chris Pine than Heath or Val.

He reminds me of Snow from Final Fantasy XIII. Let's hope his vocabulary includes more than the words "Serah" or "Protect".

I'm a bit sad that we're already moving onto IV -- does this mean we won't be getting any more Connor or Aveline? I really liked Connor and I was hoping we'd get a ridiculous number of side games for him, too -- but, I mean, pirates. Awesome. I loved naval combat, so I'm not going to complain there, and it looks like this game is going to have Blackbeard and Anne Bonny, so that's awesome. Plus, maybe we'll get to see baby!Haytham, and that would just be the cutest thing in the world. (I really liked Haytham...) Besides, if Haytham and Connor are anything to go by, grandpa Kenway is gonna be hot as heck.

From what I've read on AC forums, the decision of more Connor games would've depended on how popular he was--which he wasn't. The vast majority of commentary I've seen on AC forums has been neutral to negative to nasty. Seems most people think that they swung too far to the other side away from Ezio.

I think the problem was a little more complicated and unconscious than that, but there you go, and there's another thread for AC3 discussion. ;)

Oh PETA, you silly moos.

Love Ubisoft's response:
Ubisoft said:
History is our playground in Assassin’s Creed. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is a work of fiction that depicts the real events during the Golden Era of Pirates. We do not condone illegal whaling, just as we don’t condone a pirate lifestyle of poor hygiene, plundering, hijacking ships, and over-the-legal-limit drunken debauchery.

Every time I hear about PETA, I cannot help but think of the South Park episode where PETA protests that the cow mascot at the school is being abused, there's an election and Stan doesn't want to vote, so he runs away and ends up in a PETA camp where every person is married to an animal. There's even hybrid babies. One poor ostrich-hybrid baby just sits there crying "Kill me!". They try to pair Stan up with a baby goat. Someone comes in, starts shooting and kills everyone--except Stan and the ostrich-hybrid baby.

It's sad when parody is not so far off from truth, y'know?

I saw this the other day. Seriously looks cool.

I like the addition of fast-travel points too. In a world that huge, that'll be nice to have.

Anyone else get it yesterday and played a bit?

Overall, I'm seriously impressed by it thus far (I'm on Sequence 3 at the moment). Even on the PS3, the graphics are beautiful (yeah, it's a little silly when going through stalking zones without the additional graphics, but it doesn't affect the actual gameplay). And the short bit in 1st person didn't upset my sense of balance (I play it too long, I can lose the ability to stand up for a while, seriously), and that was my biggest concern.

But, yeah, I'm loving it so far. Edward is not Ezio. He's a completely new guy with a very different attitude about life and everything. I think I like him.

I'm getting my copy tomorrow. I can't wait! I luv pirates! Or, at least, the Hollywood-fantasy versions of pirates, heh. I've only played the first AC game. Right now, I'm playing the second one. I still prefer Altair over Ezio(so far), for some reason, though I enjoy Ezio's playfulness.

How would you describe Edward's personality, especially as the game goes on, DeleyanLee? I heard he's a bit more mercenary? (More concerned about money or fame?)

I wouldn't mind, as long as he treats his shipmates (and any allies? friends? family?) with respect. :) It seems like he does.

I usually dislike sexist playboys or extremely angry/mean or sadistic jerks. (It is why I don't play certain games like God of War, GrandTheftAuto series, etc).

Anyway, the gameplay looks good so far! If it's like the first game, then I'm definitely going to enjoy it. :) (I'm trying to get 100% completion still on that one.)

AC has 100% completion? Or are you talking about just doing all of the investigations? The concept of 100% sync as such wasn't introduced to the franchise until AC:B.

The gameplay in AC4 is smoother than any of the others. There's not as many annoying loading times as in other games. Transition from ship to shore and place to place is seamless. The fighting mechanism's pretty much the same as in AC3, though firing the multiple pistols makes it a little different. And this game has free-aim, which is also different. I suck at free-aim, so that's a bit challenging for me.

Edward is completely loyal to those he calls friends. I'm not far into the game, but the only woman he's been private with has been his wife, Caroline, who's back in England, waiting for me (flashbacks). Whether or not he indulges in the "Bettys" available in every port hasn't been touched on. But, then, even Ezio wasn't a complete cad, so we'll see. I like that he's got a sense of humor, has a fun wit, and doesn't back down from a challenge, yet he's not stupid. So far as I can tell, he's aware of his limitations, but will stretch himself when called upon. Money is important, yeah, but he's not a mindless mercenary. He wants a lot of money so he can give his wife finer things and not be a peasant all their lives, so his desire for money isn't straight greed.
