Welcome to the first annual Winter/Summer Solstice Swap. Similar to Secret Santa, participants will be gifting stories. Please review last year's Secret Santa to get a feel for what's involved.

Similar to last year, but with some changes:

1) Signing up to RECEIVE a gift means signing up to GIVE a gift. No exceptions. We had some issues with this last year and a great deal of holiday stress was had by several. There was public shaming as well. These exchanges require full participation and giving!

2) When you sign up, you put up a prompt of what you would like to receive in your gift. This can be anything, a word, a quote, an author name, an idea, a theme, whatever. Just give your gifter a direction to run in. Also specify things such as, are you okay with violence, sex, swearing, gore, and whatever-all-else censors tell us we should not enjoy so much. Unless otherwise specified, gifter will be able to assume all bets are off.

If you need ideas, themes of rebirth, winter, summer, rituals, time, whatever might interest you. Keep in mind that broad/vague prompts are better.

3) However, signing up to GIVE a gift does not necessarily mean signing up to RECEIVE a gift. We had some great extra stories the last few years. Let me know if you want to give in general or for a specific prompt that inspires you.

4) Stories around 2K are good. Longer is okay. Some industrious folks have done novels!

5) If there is someone/something you don't want to write for, for whatever reason, please rep me with your request. I will do my steady-best to honor it.

6) Avoid PMing me. I am dire at cleaning my inbox.

7) To ensure you have read to 7, please rep me (on this post) a statement that you swear to give a gift by the deadline or inform me if something dire occurs in your life. Please provide an email so I can send you your gift.

8) It is often asked who owns the story. The writer does of course. The gift is to read a story based on your prompt.

Timeline:

December 31st: Signups close (tell your friends!)

January 1st: Assignments are given

February 10th: Stories due

February 11th or 12th: Stories given out, guessing threads open.

Beta volunteers are welcome, particularly since if you ask your friend to swap and they are writing for you, this is a problem (there are tricky ways around this, but try to request betas from a group rather than asking a participant individually)

The secret story swaps are awesome and I hope everyone will enjoy it fully this year.

I'm in!

Uhh.. lets see... I'd love something fantasy dealing with hope set around the winter solstice.

I'm partial to elves and fae, but the story need not contain those. I write erotica, so I'm fine with anything from no romance to romance to sweet to burning hot.

I'm also fine with dark things, but I'd prefer no gore.

I can pretty much write anything.

For my own sanity, I should have a seperate post for signups.

Code is X/Y where X is what you write (in general!), and Y is what you want. The no hard SF, no romance, and such are in my notes, so no worries. B=Both, S=SF, F=Fantasy.

Oh. Gotta fill in the blanks, huh? hmm.

I prefer science fiction. Science fantasy is okay, too. Space opera. Steam punk.
Not too keen on swords and sorcery or epic fantasy or fantastical (ie: unbelievable) life forms. Don't write for me if you violate more than one law of physics.

Otherwise, I'm cool with anything.

Oh, and don't ask me to write anything at all like the things I prefer not to read. :D

What, and miss the joy of you cussing up a storm again?

I should point out assignments go by random number generatoring, so the 'can't writes' should be limited to 'I really really can't' They can be sent via email or rep (I know I still have to divulge my email)

So, Pthom can't do Fantasy. Got it.

My hand's in.

I'm not a big fan of animal/fantastical creatures, nor present tense. Everything else is fine.

I prefer F, but SF is just fine if its interesting. I'm a sucker for romance.

Prompt: Sibling rivalry.

Here, there, everywhere.
I'm in - majorly happy I didn't miss it this year. :hooray:

Ok, my prompt: I want something steamy involving humans in a non-Earth setting. Doesn't have to be space, I just don't want our everyday world, if that makes sense. No gore, no horror, please.

Posting so I don't forget to come back to this thread after the Christmas. Will have a better idea if I can participate after the holiday is behind me.

Er, in, I guess. Deadlines tend to get the creative juices flowing.

As for what I'd like, something with Urban/Contemporary Fantasy, fantastical creatures, preferably something humorous, and a million bonus points for internet use. However, really anything anyone is willing to write for me I'm fine with, even stuff shorter than 2k. Or you don't have to write for me at all, that's cool too.

Yessss please :D

I would like a mentoring story, with the older character and the younger character sniping at each other and being opposites but having to work together to stop all magic dissappearing from the world.

I can't do torture, otherwise I'm fine with what ever prompt is given :)

OK OK I'm in!

I like pretty much all fantasy and space opera type science fiction. And if everything could be kept at a PG-13 level that would be good. Oh, and dragons, I like dragons, and fairies. :)

I'll write anything, can't guarantee it'll be any good, but I'll try. :)

Okay, I'm in...

I'll use a theme that's served me well in the past ;). Please could I have a story on a musical theme - any type of music or a particular piece or song, but it has to be vital to the story in some way. Other than that, any setting or flavour of SF or fantasy, subtle or overt, will be fine.

As for what I'll be asked to write, hard SF is not my strong point, and I can't guarantee the results of other-world fantasy, but willing to give most things a try.

yawping barbarically over the roofs of the world
signing up, please.

prompt|druthers: This is the part I suck at. ghost hunting. iron pots. storms.

violence, sex, swearing, chickens, gore, horror, extreme-fluff, blanket scenarios, fantasy, science fiction, contemporary...I know I should list more but nothing's coming to me. I pretty much like more than I don't like and is an easier list to give. :/ But as this is a gift exchange, I'm pretty open and accepting.

edited for clarity

prompt|druthers: This is the part I suck at. ghost hunting. iron pots. storms. this can be a tense atmospheric paranormal piece, or a humorous one, or a science fiction one on an abandoned mining colony or a....really? anything! I'm easy to please. If none of those do anything for you? that's cool, too.

I'm good with: most anything, including but not limited to: violence, sex, swearing, chickens, gore, horror, extreme-fluff, blanket scenarios, fantasy, science fiction, contemporary, humor, satirical (but be prepared for me not to 'get it'. that can easily go over my head), political. Any genre, any level of sexy-times.

I'd prefer if you avoided: Torture, humiliation, extreme body fluids.

That said, I'd prefer to avoid writing those themes as well.

bonus for using a chicken. I got a thing for chickens. especially saying the word chicken.

You don't like chickens? I guess it's good I can rig this so I'm not tempted to write you Chicken Quest ;)

*reads again* Wait, you do like chickens? Please to clarify.

Alright, I should sign up :) I would love something resembling Sapkowski (dark second world) or Kay (bordering dark but not always historical fantasy). Something that touches on human nature or philosophy if you can do so without stressing :) My favorite setting is medieval exotic (wherever exotic means to you). Animals that aren't familiars but are unique characters are great. That's a lot, so pick and choose at will. :)

I don't like the whole 'but you'll like it' trope (ick). Not wild about romance. Just about anything else goes. 'Just about' means anything PG-13 or R. I like dark and gore-y (Sapkowski, Perdido St Station (which was prolly on the edge of okay)) but not horror (King). The gore has to fit of course. Sex is fine but fade to black works too.

wait! I do like chickens!

I probably do need to reword. Perhaps I will just list things I don't like. It will be a shorter list and easier to understand, maybe? *flails*

I'd just clarify that those are all good. I like that you mentioned chickens as a like :) Birds are cool and chickens are undervalued.

I've managed to leave the Cantina for the first time. I'm in.

I'm not a fan of sexytime novels. Other than that, game on!

Please, oh please, do not ask me to write something with sex in it. I know that I can't pull it off.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS! (Seriously, though, I wrote my prompt back in September, and it seems like it's the longest so far) So, without further ado, here it is:

Okay, a lot of the stuff I list for the prompt is simply inspiration-fodder. Don't feel forced to include it all, I just want to give you enough to go on.

Books and series I like: The Lies of Locke Lamora (Scott Lynch), the A Song of Ice and Fire-saga (George R. R. Martin), the City Watch subseries of the Discworld series (Terry Pratchett), The Alchemist of Souls (Anne Lyle), The Bartimaeus Trilogy (Jonathan Stroud), pretty much everything by Neil Gaiman, and The Three Musketeers (Alexandre Dumas)

Prompt: Okay, I love rogues. Thieves, assassins, highwaymen, con artists, smugglers, pirates--anyone living on the edge of the law. I'm a fantasy person and prefer second-world settings, but that doesn't mean you have to use medieval England as your inspiration--I'd love to see something Middle Eastern- or Indian- or Mediterranean-inspired (of course, I'm fine with the rest of Europe [yes, England too] and all the other continents, or something entirely from your imagination). Preferably anything pre-1800s, if you want to use a certain time period for inspiration (go as far back as you’d like!).

Male or female MC, it's up to you, but I do like someone who’s cocky, headstrong, and maybe a bit too overconfident, and who gets involved in something that’s going to cost him or her dearly. Romance is fine as long as it fits the story and isn’t shoehorned in just because (I tend to prefer already established couples over ones falling in love over the course of the story, and I'm fine with any orientation). Happy ending not necessary. Not every character has to make it out alive.

I really like city settings, especially port cities. Also, conspiracies and mysteries and double-crossings and backstabbings and cons and heists and facades! Rowboats and horses, too! Mythical creatures are great, but no zombies or vampires, please.

I’m not shy about sex or violence or gore or cursing, as long as it fits the story.

Of course, don't feel limited by any of this! If you have something entirely different in mind, just run with that.

And lastly, I cannot write SF to save my life.

I will update the sign up list in the evenings. But I did get one cursing mod confirmed :tongue
