Who knows
My parents had one of his cd's on repeat for many years.

Remember the days of the old school yard and Mathew and son are also some of my favourites along with the ones you posted.

For some reason I've never owned one of his albums, so don't really know his music, but have liked what I've heard on the radio.

I'll check out those two that you mentioned, thanks.

My parents raised me on Cat Stevens. Along with Neil Diamond and Kris Kristofferson.

His controversies aside, I love his music. He makes me wish I could play guitar.

What are some of your favorites of his?

Love, love, love Cat Stevens ( or should that be Yusuf Islam?)

Also with Chris P on Kris Kristofferson.

Both great chillin' music.

He's so naive, it's charming. It's difficult to hate his music. It's difficult to take it too seriously.

In other words, his biggest strength is his biggest weakness.

(Tea for the Tillerman is probably his most solid album, since you asked.)

Thanks. At first I thought you were talking about me. I mean the naive part, not the charming part.

I'm another one who was brought up listening to his music, along with others. My favourites are 'Father and Son' and 'Sad Lisa'. But, really I like most of his stuff.

Here's the track listening for Tea:

"Where Do the Children Play?"
"Hard Headed Woman"
"Wild World"
"Sad Lisa"
"Miles from Nowhere"
"But I Might Die Tonight"
"Longer Boats"
"Into White"
"On the Road to Find Out"
"Father and Son"
"Tea for the Tillerman"

Not bad, eh?

This was a nice discovery. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQcMCkmVuno though I wish it would have gone longer. I was just falling into it when it ended.

I found that though I didn't know some of these by title, I recognized them when I listened. Longer Boats, I've heard a hundred times but had no idea it was him.

I'd forgotten about this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ--odAAA1A

To the "simplicity" rap, for me, music doesn't have to be complex. but it does have to be honest. This guy rings true.

Love, LOVE Cat Stevens. He still sings many of his old songs as Yusuf islam. There are some concerts on youtube where he's in a small room with not more than 50 or 100 people sitting around small tables, sometimes with kids. They all look middle eastern, all dressed in western clothes with some women wearing the hijab. Interesting.

I don't think this is exactly what you're talking about, but it's very nice. A real story teller, he is. From about a year and a half ago.

He sounds great.

Funny thing...I only think of Cat Stevens as a "singles artist", due to his series of Top 40 hits in the early 1970s. Those tunes (Wild World, Peace Train, Another Saturday Night, etc.) were part of the soundtrack for my formative years, late elementary school/early junior high school. This despite the fact that my older brother was a big big Cat fan, and owned all of his albums!

He was great -- terrific songwriter, lyrical and accessible, great voice and some real heart.

There are lots of great singers and songwriters, but what's rare is someone who is so much themselves, both in singing and songwriting, that they become unique and iconic.

I'm not generally a fan of singer songwriters, nor of his style of music -- and yet, I love me some Cat Stevens, for sure.

Lady d'Arbanville is my favourite of his

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJnv-iF_viQ

There's a story in those lyrics. I always imagined something dark, gothic and Poe-esque, but apparently it's a tribute to an ex-girlfriend.

I'd heard that too. Here's the story.

Here's the girl. You might remember her as De Niro's ex wife in The Fan, or as the mob boss in The Soprano's.

So many great male vocalists and lyricists back in the day. I'm so lucky it was my day and I'm living my life with their music. In addition to Cat Stevens...
Jessie Colin Young, Van Morrison, James Taylor, Harry Chapin, they come to mind. Gentle songs with story, love it all. Oh yeah I'm listening ...
