She has been the reigning biggest best seller of Genre Romance for roughly 20 years now.

Her writing as J. D. Robb is considered Mystery, IIRC.

Is Nora Roberts considered genre romance?

That's how she got her start. And it's still an area she writes in. But after about a half-dozen years she began to branch out into mysteries, often mixing romance and mystery to the point where she had two plots going at once, neither plot weak enough to be considered a SUBplot.

She also branched out into paranormal romances. And as J. D. Robb she's popularized SF mysteries.

Her output is phenomenal, typically six books a year, one or two of them big fat books. I'm in awe of her work ethic and seek to emulate it.

I think some of you are mixing up the meaning of category versus single title and genre versus literary. Nora Roberts writes what is classed as genre fiction. She started out writing category romance for Harlequin but then became a writer of single title romance in the sub genre of romantic suspense writer which is a sub genre of romance. When people talk about "genre fiction" they generally mean not literary fiction.
Nora Roberts is not the best seller of genre fiction many writers in the thriller genre outrank her as well as horror writer Stephen King, fantasy writer JK Rowling and a number of others.
