Okeydokey.
I was doing some thinking the other day (something I try hard to avoid actually - alcohol doesn't seem to help), and I thought "Why not?".
Why not use the old first line game "theme" as a story prompt? Now, this thread isn't supposed to replace the game, but act as an adjunct to get more people writing and posting their work in SYW.
Here're the rules.
Every month I, or someone who, er, "volunteers" (hear that everyone? Anyone?) will post a first line prompt.
You must start your story with that first line.
After that the story can go anywhere you like, but you have to use the entire first line given for that month.
As an incentive, I will be giving away free pdf copies of my book Hatchings to anyone who participates in this challenge this month. Hatchings is an 80k hard(er) SF novel that fills the "icky bug" niche of the horror genre and normally sells for $6.99 (currently on sale at Amazon for $3.49).
As always, try to keep your work to around 3 thousand words, post 'em in Horror SYW, and let us know about it here or up in Haggis' Crate (otherwise known as our friendly local cantina and massage parlor).

Okay, this month's First Line Challenge...
"It definitely was not 'the best of times'."
