About two weeks ago I published my first book on amazon. It's a part of a series I've been working on for the past 8 years and polishing on and off in between finishing college and uni. Last year I came to the conclusion that I finally had to get around to publishing it, so I started querying as many agents as I could. I got a few requests for partials but alas none of them felt the book was quite right for them. So I realized that for whatever reason this book wasn't meant to be traditionally published, since the hot genres in YA at the moment seem to be vampires and paranomal.
So anyway, I decided to self-publish it. I had someone from deviant art creat a cover that I quite liked, but everyone else felt it was too "busy" for a cover. My cousin created this one, which I think works amazingly well.
I'm not gonna lie, when I first published I did have the hope somewhere in the back of my mind that perhaps this would be a breakaway hit (doesn't everyone have that little notion in the back of their head?). Hey, what can I say? I believe in my product lol. Anyway, it hasn't been a breakaway hit; to date I've sold about 7 copies and I'm pretty sure half of them were from a friend and his friends.
So I've given up on being an immediate bestseller. Instead, I'm going to follow the suggestions and advice I've garnered from here, and put up the rest of the books in the series and see where it goes from there. At least this way they'll be read by someone.
I'll keep everyone posted.
