About two weeks ago I published my first book on amazon. It's a part of a series I've been working on for the past 8 years and polishing on and off in between finishing college and uni. Last year I came to the conclusion that I finally had to get around to publishing it, so I started querying as many agents as I could. I got a few requests for partials but alas none of them felt the book was quite right for them. So I realized that for whatever reason this book wasn't meant to be traditionally published, since the hot genres in YA at the moment seem to be vampires and paranomal.

So anyway, I decided to self-publish it. I had someone from deviant art creat a cover that I quite liked, but everyone else felt it was too "busy" for a cover. My cousin created this one, which I think works amazingly well.

I'm not gonna lie, when I first published I did have the hope somewhere in the back of my mind that perhaps this would be a breakaway hit (doesn't everyone have that little notion in the back of their head?). Hey, what can I say? I believe in my product lol. Anyway, it hasn't been a breakaway hit; to date I've sold about 7 copies and I'm pretty sure half of them were from a friend and his friends.

So I've given up on being an immediate bestseller. Instead, I'm going to follow the suggestions and advice I've garnered from here, and put up the rest of the books in the series and see where it goes from there. At least this way they'll be read by someone.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Hi, Penny. You might like to read the guidelines. We ask that you use "trade publishing" here, not "traditional".

Good luck with your journey. I hope your sales improve.

My first self published work was an overnight success. Sold 19 copies in six months. :)

I lost a half-month's pay on that one. I guarantee that epublishing changes the lessons a beginning self publisher learns. At least the ones that hit the pocketbook.

There's one thing you need to remember about this big puddle of publishing:

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.

haha, I think that's what I have to look forward to as well. But I'm going to publish the other two books in the series as well and maybe that will help bump sales.

Gonna try and keep paddling.

Well, just enlisted in the KDP Select program. But can't seem to find how you choose which days to have your book promoted as free.

Also, I'm starting to see that maybe 7 sales in 2 weeks isn't THAT bad ;). Is this generally a slow time of the year?

Summer can be slow for some people. :)

You're doing well - it can take time to build up momentum. Good luck!

The KDP dashboard used to be a lot easier to navigate - I think you need to tick the book then use a drop down to choose your free days but it's been a long time since I was on Select so I'm probably wrong. :)

I don't use Select so I can't help you there. However, I just wanted to welcome you to the gang and wish you the best of luck.

Seven sales is doing okay.

Somewhere on one of the book pages will be a link "Manage Promotions". Use that to schedule your free days.

Thanks guys. I chose to promote it for free on Aug 13 and 14th to see what happens. If anyone's looking for an intriguing YA fantasy, feel free to download and let me know what you think ;)
