I was indirectly involved in the event. I was employed at CIA as an analyst, and we were put on alert and had to stay either at Langley or be where they could find us in a hurry. My daughter was born two days before the public announcement, and I was really busy between home and work. My memories of the event kind of line up with the Missiles of October docudrama for the timeline, so you can probably rely on that.

We wrote a fanfic that took place during the Cuban Missile Crisis and DW did a lot of research for it.

As FOTSGreg says, Thirteen Days: A Memoir of the Cuban Missile Crisis by Robert F Kennedy is a very good book; and there are several good references in the Wiki article.

There's also probably youtube video of Adlai Stevenson and Valerian Zorin's exchange in the UN (no youtube when we wrote that story, alas!)

The CIA has released a bunch more documentation than was available when we were researching. I was pleased to note that we'd guessed correctly on several matters.
