Soundflower is a free Mac OS X system extension that lets you send the sound from one application (say, a DRM-protected karaoke track purchased before DRM was removed from iTunes) to another (like Audacity so you can drop the pitch a couple half-tones and not blow out your eyeballs hitting those high notes).
It adds two new core audio devices to the System Preferences Sound pane as well as into applications that let you pick the audio device. It's been updated to work with Lion and I can vouch for that.
The uses, as they say, are limited only by the imagination.
