When I was growing up, I thought that being a writer (which automatically included being published) meant writing a book, mailing it off to a publisher and checking the mailbox every day in anticipation of the letter that read, "We are pleased to notify you that we would like to publish your novel."

With some variations, that's what I still thought until a couple of years ago. Of course, I learned a long time ago, that much rewrite and many drafts were involved and that it was extraordinarily unlikely that the first publisher I queried would want to publish my book. However, I still believed in the process; that eventually I would find a publisher following the "write it, mail it, anticipate it" steps.

Fast forward to the publishing revolution. Revolution is defined in the dictionary as "a dramatic change in ideas or practice." Boy, is that an understatement! Today, in order to even be considered for publication, an author needs to develop an "online presence."

So, what are we to do? We make the necessary adjustments to our thinking and we go about the business of working hard to establish that presence. Why? Well, for me, because being a writer means that I NEED to write and, that I want to have READERS!

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the 'forum jump' you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. After you post 50 posts you can use the SYW areas to get help there. The password for some of the areas is…..vista. A word to the wise, it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Thankfully I have already been blogging before I got serious about writing so it was an easy transition to add some social media. Twitter is the bomb!

Anyways, welcome and hope you stick around!

Today, in order to even be considered for publication, an author needs to develop an "online presence."

That's only true for nonfiction authors. Novelists don't need a platform. (Which isn't to say that novelists shouldn't participate in their own marketing.)

But yeah, the publication process is much more complex than I'd grown up thinking. When I was younger, I thought agents were just for movie stars.

Keep that positive attitude you've got, that willingness to adapt to the new information you'll learn here, and enjoy.

We really are living in revolutionary times aren't we?

Writing is one of the easiest things in the world, writing well an aspiration many of us will never achieve. Being “published” is now a term spoken through a raised nose.

I am rich, therefore my genes are clearly better than yours! (actually I am dirt poor and quite proud to remain that way, but I do pride myself on the quality of my lineage – not to say yours is in any way inferior.)

I like your closing sentiment, Patricia. You want to have readers, not necessarily to be published. That is
laudable.

C.G., I'm sorry to disappoint you but, when I said that I want to have readers, I didn't mean to imply that I didn't care whether or not I was published. What I meant was that, in order to be published and have readers these days, I need to adapt to "the new order."
