Hi all!

I conducted a search on Examiner, and I haven't really read any up-to-date info on here. I was wondering about the professionalism on the site and whether or not it is good for getting industry contacts in your field. I know that the pay may be extremely low or non-existent. Basically, I want to know if Examiner writers are taken seriously. I have professional writing experience, but I'm seeking to further brand myself in a specific topic area, hopefully having regular writing opportunities offered to me in my topic area. I have a contract to write monthly articles in my topic area for another site for decent pay, but I'm thinking about building on that. Will other online sites and PR people take my Examiner column seriously?

It is a content site so your peers on there will be mostly non-professionals with negligible industry connections. Examiner is largely what you make of it. It looks 'newspapery' but anyone in the industry will know that it is pretty much the same as Hubpages or Squidoo.

Some people leverage the access to Google News to build their profile a bit. But, in itself, being an Examiner is fairly meaningless in that just about anyone who can string a sentence together can become one.

Examiner is just another content mill. It's not going to do much for you beyond possibly earning some coins.

I became the Examiner for something related to my day job field. Because I already had a following, I made grocery money with it.

I didn't realize the following mattered so much and recommended it to a couple buddies. The sheer amount of effort they had to go to, with the links and the promoting and the flogging, in order to make more than a couple dollars? Eh.

That was before they lowered the pay rates.

Now, all that said, I have tried all of the content mills, and Examiner is my favorite :)

Examiner is like Suite 101, you'd be better off getting paid for online copy-writing jobs than writing for these content sites. I suppose they need fresh content to attract advertisers....

In a cents-per-words basis I found Hubpages to do better, but still hobby money. It depends a bit on what your style and topic is.

I've been at Examiner since forever, and although my $$ has gone down, it's still worthwhile. I have a great topic (Orlando Theme Parks: http://www.examiner.com/theme-parks-in-orlando/barbara-nefer) that lends itself well to the web, and I promote it through social media, so I have some very good PR contacts and get to go to many cool events.

Examiner is good if you choose your topic carefully, especially if you write about something for which you have passion. It's my "fun" work when I need a quick break from other work.
