Wolves are one of my favorite animals, however I have not found enough fictional novels on them. I'd even love more non-fiction. I would like to find something a little similar to Watership Down (or Lion King or Kimba), except with wolves. Although this is one of the stories I'd like to write, but I'd really love to read more. There is a huge fanbase for wolves as I used to role-play them on various wolf role-play forums.

So is there anyone else who writes about wolves be they a main protagonist or helpful to the protagonist? (I don't want the atypical antagonistic wolf though. I've done a lot of research on wolves, because of the role-plays and they really do not randomly attack people. I'm no expert, I wanted to be, but my sciences were too weak to become a wildlife biologist.)

Also Balto which I loved, turned out to leave out a very crucial character in the movies, Togo. As for Balto being part wolf that is open for debate (you can even see his coloring in one of the museums since they had him stuffed and preserved). If only one could still ask Leonhard Seppala. So I'm not really counting that though I did enjoy all three movies. And I wish there were more games like WolfQuest too...

So I'm looking for any recommendations as well as input on what others think about stories that involve wolves (in a good light). And was wondering if anyone were themselves writing about or intending to write about wolves. Perhaps even someone writing about the Idiatrod where Togo features as a character, if not the main.

How about "White Fang," by Jack London?

Carlene

I can't believe I forgot about that, but I think I read that some time ago so its a bit fuzzy in my recollection. I may need to reread it. As far as I am aware it might be the only novel with a wolf that is not painted in an evil light.

Thank you for mentioning it.

Wolves factor in to several of Barbara Kingsolver's novels.
Well, in Animal Dreams, there's a pet wolf.
She has another novel called Prodigal Summer, which is all about wolves (or coyotes; can't remember).

Thank you for the recommendation. I'll have to look into finding these novels. I eat stories about or with wolves up like candy as long as their not an evil or unrealistically depicted character.

The Mercy Thompson novels deal with werewolves; she's in the wolves' heads a lot, so much of the writing is about pack dynamics. It might be up your alley.

I'll have to look into it, though I wasn't looking for werewolf stories. However I thank you for your suggestion. My to-read pile is getting just a bit bigger.

Ordinary Wolves by Seth Kantner -- one of my all-time favorite novels.

Thank you for the suggestion. Most novels involving wolves I've read at all or seen on television have put the wolf in a bad light so I appreciate finding more books that show them in a truer light, fiction or non-fiction.

I'd like to point out that they're actually good guys, 80% of the time, which is why I suggested it. Like real wolves, the werewolves in this world are misunderstood and mistreated.

The series also has fey, vampires, shapeshifters, magic and a bunch of other things. Good stories overall, but the pack dynamics of the werewolf characters are highly memorable.

I do enjoy reading about the other elements mentioned. I've always enjoyed pack dynamics. And 80% of the time is a good chunk. Thanks again.

Have you read,Lobo,by Earnest Thompson Seton, yet? It's fact, and if it doesn't seem as strange as fiction...well, I'll eat my sombrero. That one wolf changed the future of our country...in a good way.

Actually, I might have, but I don't remember. However the title and author sounds very familiar. Whether I have or have just forgotten I'll just need to read (or reread) it. Thanks.

Also consider "The Call of the Wild" by Jack London. Well, it's actually about a dog, but the dog is portrayed as being pretty wolf-like so.

I've got a WIP involving wolves. It was a short story but has mutated into a novel (d'oh!).

Edit: The Jungle Book has helpful wolves in it.

Also, go onto Amazon.com and look under 'The Best Wolf Novels'. There's a short list.

Kavik the Wolfdog by Walt Morey ...Excelent book. I reread it every couple years or so.

And Promise of The Wolves + Secret of the Wolves by Dprpthy Hearst...Damn good books. Not only did she consult wolf experts whe writing them, but she actually took their advice. AMAZING books (at least the promise one, have yet to read book two of the series).

out in the bush
Farley Mowat's "Never cry wolf" obviously comes to mind. Another great book (creative non-fiction) is "Secret go the wolves" by R.D. Lawrence. And you may want to check out the books that wolf biologists such as Erik Ziemen, Bob Hayes ("Wolves of the Yukon"), and L. David Mech have written.
Jack London's facts are to be taken with huge grains of salt.

We live out in the bush and I've written a memoir about it in which wolves feature a lot less than they could - too many nasty people out there. They are amazing animals.

Oh, and I almost forgot, my most favourite wolf book of all times: "Julie of the wolves" by Jean Craighead George! An award-winning novel really geared at kids, but a great read at any age.

Oh man, I totally forgot about Julie! One of my favorite book back in middle school. I wouldn't mind picking it up again.

I also read the sequel "Julie's Wolf Pack", and although I didn't find it as engaging as the first one, I still enjoyed it.

The Sight by David Clement-Davies, and the sequel Fell.
