Sorry, guys, I asked this once before, but I got a kind of confusing one from The Missouri Review:

Thank you for giving us the chance to consider blah blah for publication in The
Missouri Review. Though it does not fit our current needs, we appreciate your
interest in our magazine and your commitment to quality writing.

Very well-written story. Great descriptions and emotions. Please submit more!

We wish you the best of luck publishing your work and hope you'll consider
sending us more in the future,

Sincerely,

The Editors

Now, I've gotten a rejection from them before, but it didn't include the "Very well-written story. Great descriptions and emotions. Please submit more!"

But it didn't really mention anything specific about the story other than that and people on here said a personal mentions something in your story specifically so is this just another one of those "tiered' rejections?

I can't be certain, but this reads like a top of the line form that's reserved for writers the editor really likes. At a great many publications, it isn't either/or. There's more than one form. Writers that show no promise just get the blah, blah, blah form. Writers that show a lot of promise, but that submit a particular story that just isn't what the editor wants, get the form that basically says, "We love your writing, and we definitely want to see more."

The reason the rejection doesn't give more detail about this particular story is because the editor simply doesn't want it. This means he won't go into anything like asking for revisions or a rewrite.

But he loves your writing, and definitely wants to see more in hopes of finding one that fits the magazine perfectly.

I agree with Jamesaritchie. Although it's not what you wanted to hear (i.e. "We'll take it") I would definitely be encouraged by this if I were you.

James hit the nail on the head. These comments aren't there to be nice. They liked the story, but simply couldn't find a place for it. Write something new for them - maybe try to get a taste of what they need - and give it another shot.

Of course, the story that got rejected should go out the door again as well.
