Having posted this question in several areas without a response, I am almost ready to concede that no one here knows anything about the reprint market for out of print non-fiction (fiction too) books. Which makes two of us.

If anyone has some experience in this area, I'd love to know which publishers I could send material to. Otherwise I may have to go the ebook route.

If the rights have fully returned to you, then you can sub it to any publishers that would be relevant. Of course, whether anyone will be buy it is another question entirely. If you have sales data from the original publication that should probably be included in the query (and obviously the fact that it has been previously published should be included). I'm afraid I don't know of any publishers who make a specific point of buying OOP books, but it definitely happens. I think the best thing to do is to treat it like a sub of a new book (i.e. write the best query letter you can, study the market and pick the most appropriate publishers, etc.), but just make sure you inform them that it is an OOP book and that rights have fully reverted to you (if they haven't you shouldn't be subbing it).

Good luck!

I'm definiety thinking about the same thing. My non-fic book is 17 years out of print and I've been thinking about revising and giving it a totally new face--in other words, an updated second edition. I would also like to hear about the possibilities. I'm assuming that I have my rights back, since it's been so long and the original publisher is now gone. My book only appears on Amazon as used copies under private sale.

I'd like to hear about this too.

Tri,
This is a confusing issue, but I'm not sure the rights automatically revert once a book goes out of print. You may have to ask for them, which is what I did.I have all sorts of documents. In one case, no one could even verify my book's existence, since the publisher had been sold so many times and my contract was locked in a vault in Pittsburgh (or maybe Cincinnati) and they couldn't get to it.
