how long is the typical partial?

Just curious. When we say an agent asked for a partial, what's the typical length? As in, the recent statement that takes the average agent 1-2 months to respond to a partial.

Also, if you were asked to send in your first 10 pages with your query, then asked to send in a partial of say 30 pages, are both sets partials? Is it normal to ask for longer and longer partials? Or was the 1st 10 pages part of the query, and isn't considered a partial?

Sample pages with the query are not considered a partial, as everyone who queries has to send them. All the partials I've sent were 50 pages, so I think that's pretty standard.

The standard is 50 pages, but the agent will tell you exactly what they want.

I've had agents request partials of 3 chapters, 5 chapters, 30 pages and 50 pages. A friend once had to send a 100-page partial.

50 pages seems to be the most common, though.

And yes -- anything you send alongside your query tends not to be considered a partial.

The "standard", if there still is such a thing, is the first fifty pages or three chapters, whichever is shorter.
