Noob Questions About iTunes. [Solved]

Can MP3 files be transferred from iTunes to any MP3 player, or is only the iPod compatible?


How are songs transferred directly from iTunes? I know how to burn songs onto CD but not how to transfer them to an MP3 player. I've never done that before.


Superbowl Sunday Night, I tried to transfer songs from my computer to an iPod Nano, and the songs did transfer, but I can't find them on the device libraries. When I opened the drive named IPOD E or something like that, the songs do appear there. I just can't find them anywhere on the device. The format is mp4.

If you transfer the files directly to your IPOD using Windows folders, the songs won't show up. The only way I know to transfer songs is copying and pasting a list of songs inside the Itunes software from your hard drive to the IPOD.

MP3 format music should be playable with your IPOD without any modifications to the files.

Yes. You'll have to delete those songs the same way you put them onto the drive - directly from the folders. These songs most likely won't show up when you open the Itunes software.

Don't feel silly for asking - there's no place I know of to get these kinds of questions answered on Apple's IPOD user forums. If you have any more questions, post back or PM me.

If you want to transfer songs to an iPod, it's best to go through iTunes. Don't use folders or access the iPod filesystem directly — only do that if you want to move songs to a non-iPod mp3 player.

There are two ways to add media to the iPod: manually manage your music (and shows, movies, etc.), or use the "sync" option.

Manually managing your music is exactly what it says on the tin. You move all songs to and delete them from the iPod manually. This is easy to understand, but can be cumbersome if you want to make a lot of changes to your library often.

To keep your iPod in this mode, you should check the following box:



To add songs (even if it's not in the above mode), just drag them from your main library onto your iPod's library in the sidebar:



However, what can be a lot easier if you make a lot of changes to your library on your computer is to set up syncing for your music:



Check the "Sync Music" box. Scroll down, you'll see lists of your different playlists, albums, genres, and artists. Check whichever ones you want on your device. Personally, I've found it useful to make a playlist called "iPod Master," and I'll add songs I want to it that don't easy fit into any other syncable category, then syncing that playlist.

Syncing is useful because it makes your iPod reflect exactly the parts of your library that you check in this area. If you make a change to a playlist or album, etc., it'll automatically be reflected on the iPod when it's synced, without having to mess with changing anything on the iPod yourself. E.g., you change around playlist on your computer, then the playlist will change on the iPod without you having to do anything but hit "Sync." Also note that *not* checking a box doesn't exclude anything. If a song by unchecked artist X is in my checked playlist A, that song will still be on my iPod, but not the rest of the X's songs (unless they're on other checked playlists, albums, genres, etc.).

Note that you can still manually add songs when using syncing and remove them in the following way:



iTunes can be confusing sometimes, but it's pretty useful once you know your way around.
