Website hosting - how hard to switch?

I went through the (for me) ordeal of setting up a website last May, and now it looks like the company I was dealing with has decided to almost double the cost of hosting, up to about $110/year. I don't really think I'm getting any special value for that, so I'd like to switch, if I can.

Can I? I mean, I know I can, somehow, but how hard would it be? I don't really care if I lose the content on the site (it's not all that great, anyway, to be honest), but I'd really want to keep the same internet address.

And if I CAN switch without too much trauma, does anyone have a suggestion for who to switch to? I'm in Canada, if that matters, and I'd like a site that has some level of identity protection (I write erotica under a pseudonym, and I'd like to keep it that way). Thanks for any help.

You'll need to find a new host.

You need to move over any data you want to keep, or put up a new site.

You'll then need to change the DNS record at the place you've registered your domain to use the DNS data for your new host. This is not difficult, but you do need to pay attention.

I don't have any information at all about Canadian ISPs, but I suspect someone here will.

Were I you, I would want a Canadian ISP.

Hi there Kate,

I am a web designer based in Canada, and I would be more than happy to assist you with transferring your site over to my server. Be sure to let me know the details at [email protected]. Also let me know what you were paying originally for hosting, and I can match it.

I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you are having with your website! I will help alleviate your stress in any way I can.
