Where's a good place for Grant info?

I have decided to make a documentary dealing with suicide in young, Native American men, using my nephew as a case study. I don't need much, but travel to his home tribal area and to interview experts will probably cost a bit.

Any ideas?

Contact the District Chief or Tribal Council tell them your idea and maybe they can back your costs.

My wife is Native and she looked into doing something like this once. She was looking at a grant that Sundance offered to Native American filmmakers. I don't know if it is still offered, but it may be a place to start.

I've written the tribe (Nez Perce), but there's no telling how long that will take or if they'll help. I thought it would be best to look into other possible resources at the same time.

My nephew was half Native American (my brother's a pale face like me). I don't know if I'd qualify, but I'll sure look into it.

By the way, what is your wife's bloodline. My wife is 1 / 16 Cherokee - you can see a little bit in her mother, but my wife has blond hair and blue eyes.

She's 1/2 Lakota Sioux - Pine Ridge is her rez. There are a lot of stories and movies that could be made on this subject. Best of luck getting a grant and if you need any help with it I'd be glad to do what I can.

Pine Ridge really struck my mind, I shouldn't have had to look it up. That was where the AIM problems happened, isn't it?

Those were some very interesting events.

I really need to do some traveling. I'm in Texas, his family lives in Southern Utah, and the tribe information is in Idaho and Washington.

The 2006 Annual Register of Grant Support is your best bet. It's a massive, very expensive volume of every single grant available in the country each year. There's a whole section on Native American grants, as well as educational grants that can get you this money. Ask your librarian if she can order it in from a large library system as a reference book. You'll probably have to look at it IN the library, but you'll definitely get the answers you'll need. The link above is to Yahoo Shops so you can see what it looks like, and get the ISBN and edition, but you should be able to find it somewhere in the library system. Hardly anyone but a professional grant writer needs to OWN it. (I happen to, but I loaned mine out just recently to a local non-profit seeking funding, or I'd look for you.)

I'm within 30 miles of three universities and two community college districts, one of them will have it. I've found a couple on line, but with deadlines it looks like at least a year before I'd even know.
