I just sold my first story ever, to Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine (Yay!). But now I'm curious about how reprints and anthologies work. I've seen a few markets that accept reprints on Duotrope, but hardly any anthologies. Is that something I need to go looking for, or are they mainly solicited? And if I need to track them down myself, where do I look?

If you have your heart set on getting a story reprinted in an anthology, you'll have to wait for an anthology to come around that accepts reprints (or yes, get famous enough that someone will solicit a story from you). Duotrope and Ralan.com both say if a market accepts reprints.

Otherwise, I'd suggest you get to work writing a new story to get published!

Straight reprint anthologies can be extremely difficult to find, though they do exist. Outside of original anthologies, most, in my experience, contain stories that have either won awards, or that the editor of the anthology picks as one of the best of the year. When this is the case, the writer has no control. The editor reads as many magazines as possible, and picks the stories he believes are the best out there.

Also keep in mind that your contract with ASIM may have some period of exclusivity, so it may be some time before you can shop your story around to anthologies. Check the contract as it should specify this information.

Congratulations on selling to ASIM, they are a very solid, respectable market.

I agree with Alex. Check your contract to see when you can shop the story around.

ASIM is indeed a good respectable market, so you obviously did something right! Go do it again, just in case suitable reprint markets don't turn up.

Do check your contract. It will almost certainly say no one else can publish the story until after they do. But there should be no time limit after this.

Yes, I know it's still under contract, and I don't plan on looking for a reprint market until after those rights expire. But when they do, I want to hit the ground running and milk every possible cent from that story :D
