to use an agent or not

I'm hoping soon i can start the process of getting my novel published. So i probably will be asking lots of questions. For starters, the novels I'm writing are m/m stories, mostly around the romance category. I've seen some smaller publishing companies taking submissions for novels like Dreamspinner Press. Is it worth submitting directly to the publishing company or would it be better to try to get an agent? If this is in the wrong thread, sorry about that. I wasn't sure where to post this.

The choice of signing with an agent depends on your career goals. You say you write m/m, specifically romance, and right now the vast majority of those books are published by e-presses. Dreamspinner, LooseID, Samhain, Ellora's Cave, just to name a few, publish m/m romance and none of them require an agent. I can't think of any e-presses that do, so it's expected that you submit directly to the publishers.

And very few agents will represent a book that can only be subbed to the e-pubs. Not many offer advances, so there isn't much in it for the agent.
