So, say your agent sells your book. It's not a special friendship, just an agent/author situation. Do you send a thank-you gift?

I would say that there is no more special friendship than that between an author and the agent who sells his/her book.

Just kidding (not really). It is technically a business arrangement, so if you're the kind of person who sends gifts when one of your business partners does something awesome on your behalf, go for it. A bottle or plate of something delicious would be appropriate.

I already give her fifteen percent of everything she sells.

It's your agent's job to sell your book, so it's not an act that requires a special gift. However, I know some folks do it, especially if the agent gets them a fantastic deal. There's nothing wrong with a thank you, but it isn't required, and your agent won't think less of you if you don't.

I think it's something you don't have to do, but some people just like giving away gifts...agents won't decline them.

Now if you're giving gifts with your query...

Some clients like to send gifts of food/candy/flowers, especially around the holidays. Absolutely not necessary, but nice and will be appreciated of course, if you are just the "gifty" type. However you might want to just drop the agent a note to ask what the best address is for such a gift.

Some agencies are closed, or agents are working from home, during this time. It is really gross to get back on January 4 to a box or two of rotten pears... :)

I'd advise against sending agents gifts if you're not one of their clients already, though. That can come across as alarmingly stalkerish.

So the six pack of strippers I sent to a top NYC agency that does not represent me, (YET), is more than likely not a good idea?

Who knew????

And here I thought those plastic six-pack rings were only dangerous to birds and sealife. Apparently you can trap strippers in them as well. ;)
