Has anyone used cat litter made out of recycled paper? I know this is an odd question but I have to ask - is it supposed to smell so bad? I usually use the wood based stuff but as that keeps going up in price, I thought I'd try a different type and be better for the environment.

Problem is, it smells better after the cat has had a crap. Did I get a dodgy bag or does it really stink like this?

Ew! Nope. I use Arm and Hammer's brand cat litter.

I haven't tried the wood stuff, but I've tried lots of cat litter. This stuff really takes care of the smell and it's scoopable.

That's what really matters to me.

The wood stuff is good (less dust, covers the smell) but it's getting expensive. On the other hand, this recycled paper stuff is awful.

I haven't tried the recycled paper one for our kitties. We've been using The World's Best Cat Litter, modest name :), it's made of ground corn. Almost no dust, good odor control and works in self cleaning boxes. 7lb bag is $7,they have up to a 17 pound bag, I think is the largest but right now the company is having a rebate special

I only use clay based. It comes in a big green plastic tub and it's scented.

I've got a bag of clumping stuff to test. If that's no good, they can use the bog like everyone else.

The one I use clumps well. Very easy to scoop.

My cat craps a lot, so I need something that will stand up to it.

I use the clumping stuff too - but I'm preparing to potty train my cat. Articles I've read say it can be done in 2-4 weeks, maybe a little more - but anything to get rid of the cat box!

I tried the newspaper stuff a while ago, but reverted to clay based because it is a lot cheaper, and I don't have a lot of money.

I don't remember it smelling. I actually liked it a lot, because there was no dust, and I'm allergic to dust.

Try another bag of that brand, and if it still smells right out of the bag, try another brand (if you can find one). I also found that it was really hard to find--only one specialty pet store carried it, and none of the grocery stores did.

How do you go about that?

If I had the time and it worked in the end, it would be wonderful.

baking soda on the bottom, a thin layer of pine nuggets then clay.

it works for my cats. And it really shouldn't smell bad. perhaps a diet change is in order.

I LOVE this stuff! There is almost no odor, and the best part - it's flushable! Scoop and flush. I love it!

I use Tidy Cats for Small Spaces. It's clay based, clumps well, and I don't have any problems with dust. I've tried lots of scoopable litters, and that one seems to be the very best. The cat does sometimes throw it out of her box, but it sweeps up easily.

The flushable kind you guys are using sounds kind of neat, though... I may give it a try.

I have used Yesterday's News for the past eight years, but I use it for our pet bunny, not the cats. It's always worked well for him, no smell and very absorbent.

I used to use World's Best, and really liked it. The problem was that my cat developed a corn allergy in her food, and continued to have allergy problems to the litter.

I now use Swheat Scoop, which is a wheat based litter, and is completely flushable. I love it, but it's lighter than the World's Best stuff, so the fuzzy minion kicks it all over the place.
