Is anyone here familiar with Rhetorical Grammar: Grammatical Choices, Rhetorical Effects by Martha Kolln?

I was curious how it might compare to, oh, the Chicago Manual. I need to purchase it for a class, so whether it's worth the $30 (same relative price as Chicago) is sort of moot, but I want to know what to take of it. A lot of students at my university who already own the resource from previous classes like it enough to keep it, rather than sell it (which seems to say a lot), but it's also a text I've never heard of until now.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I've never been able to get my hands on a copy, but I've been told by many that it's one of the best at actually teaching grammar. I know it's used in various writing programs all over the country. Not just programs for writers, but any course where writing is needed, such as legal briefs, business reports, etc.

I know it contains various exercises that are suposed to be essential to using the book well, and in this sense, is more like a textbook than a simple grammar guide.

Thanks James, that seems to coincide with what I've heard here. Apparently my university uses the book for many courses, not just English like you said, and in my case it's toward a grammar brush-up before tutoring/editing papers at our writing center.

Good. I didn't doubt its credibility, but I'm glad to know others can remark well on it (especially since I have to buy it).

Thanks again!

Thanks RGame, I've been using that site for awhile, too. This time around the bookstore was actually cheaper -- can you believe that?
