Hey everyone!

I'm writing a YA paranormal novel that takes place in Alaska. Specifically, in and around Skagway, Alaska.

There are two timelines: Present day and 1897 (which was the gold rush in the area).

I've done some research on Tlingit People, but mostly internet. (My local library is a bit scant on any other state history other than Texas. Because we love ourselves.)

What I need to confirm is that the Tlingit were indeed the native group in that region at the time, and then also, I need to find something that gives a general impression of their relationship with the American settlers/miners. There's a slight Hatfield & McCoy romance going on in this book between a native boy and an American girl, so I want to make sure I have the right dynamic from both people groups. Right now I'm assuming they (mainly: Americans) weren't very welcoming/accepting of the natives because, well, when have we been?

If you have any ideas of where I could look, or places you could point me to, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much, everyone! Happy writing!

This might see more traffic over in the Research/Interviewees area... I'll leave it here for a while and if we don't get some action, I'll move it. :) If I forget (ol' people have a tendency to do that, y'know), PM me. Heh.

Why not email THEIR library and ask them? http://www.skagway.org/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={6669AE16-DC52-4E67-89F6-7C1BC394A10A}

The time frame sounds about right to me. If you want to get a good understanding of the Tlingit culture, you may want to check out Symbolic Immortality by Sergei Kan.

I don't know how much it goes into the relationship with miners/settlers, but if you want to make your native boy authentic, it covers just about everything you could ever want to know about the culture. His motivations for doing things, his actions, etc. would be very specific to the way the Tlingit experience the world. Plus it’s just an interesting read. :)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I have already emailed Skagway and an organization for Native Culture, but have been waiting for almost two weeks to hear back. I just wanted some more direction. This story is eating at my brain.

Thanks again!
