I am looking for some Superhero novels. There are some PB's of this type, but a quick glance at the bookshelves at the local bookstore came up nill. It was mainly detective, dragons and undead.

YA and MG Superheroes?

Can't think of any off-hand. Mostly it's normal kids getting caught up in unexpected adventures.

Okay, here's the question that needs to be asked...

Why are most of these books tongue-in-cheek?

Is it the preference of the readers or the writers?

It seems to me that even the products put out my Marvel and DC are more humorous when targeting younger age groups, like the animated afternoon shows. I suspect it is something the younger demographic likes.

Pick up a copy of "Who Can Save Us Now." It is a good collection of short stories about superheroes. The collaboration of the two editors is great!

RISE OF RENEGADE X by Chelsea Campbell, but that's more of an anti-hero. :)

There are a lot of superhero novels on the humorous side. I would love to see a really dark one, but that may be more YA.

It may have something to do with the developmental stage MG kids are at. Younger readers, kindergarten and below, still believe in superheroes. They're just as real as Santa and the Toothfairy. First graders are starting to question. By MG age, they get that Batman is a cartoon character. So taking it too seriously would be like saying, I'm still a baby who believes in that stuff. But making fun of it--well, now, that allows them to still indulge in all the fun parts of superheroes without getting caught still wishing for it to be true.

JSK makes a good point. At the same time, MG readers aren't ready for the more modern, dark and tortured take on superheroes as pioneered by Frank Miller and Alan Moore and the like. YA readers are, though!
