Hi All,

First of all I apologize if this is not the relevant place for posting the query which bothers me a lot.

I have two computers in my home. Both receive cable internet. One computer just got back from getting its hard drive wiped. I set it up, plugged in the ethernet and the internet worked just fine. I've been installing various programs and after one reboot, the internet just did not work. I went to the Network Connections and tried a rightclick/repair on Local Area Connection, but I got an error along the lines of "Failed to query TCP/IP Settings, Cannot proceed." I've tried running all manner of network connection wizards to no avail.

What can I do?

Thanks,
Trevor.

A world all my own.
Go at it systematically. Start by checking the network connection on the back of the PC, with everything on and connected there should be an LED blinking. Do check if there is more than one network connection on the back while you're there, that might save you a few hours. :) That will rule out any wiring issues. If you suspect there is a problem, try different ports on your router (I assume you have one). Try another cable if you have one, specifically try the connection the other machine is connected to, you know that works.
Next one would be to check if the network adapter has been detected properly. Right click on "My Computer" and choose manage. In device manager you can check if the network card has been installed. If you don't have anything under Network Adapters, that's your problem. Figure out the network card details and try reinstalling it's drivers.
If that all seems okay right click on "My Network Places" and select properties in XP. If it's Vista open Control Panel, select Network and Sharing Centre and select Manage Network Connections. From there you can right click on the network adapter's connection icon and select Properties. Your good fortune is that you have another PC so that's when you compare settings for the TCP/IP protocol. I expect it should all be set to obtaining the settings automatically, anything else gets very specific and you might want to contact your ISP.
Last would be some kind of firewall, either the Windows one or another you may have installed. A quick check is to turn that off and see if you get through. Again, you may be able to compare settings with the other machine

Happy hunting.

If the internet worked just fine, you installed some things, and then it doesn't work, I'd go with System Restore myself, too. Something you installed doesn't play nicely with others ;) Of course, you could have unplugged something, etc, coincidentally.

When reinstalling those things, reboot after each one and check for internet. It's probably just one of them if it is a software issue.
