Many years ago, I read a horror novel and now can't think of the title or the author. I'm hoping someone here might recognize the story and help me recall.

It was a fairly big book and was very much along the lines of The Stand and Swan Song -- most of the population having died as the result of something horrible.

This book was about some virus or something or other that was bringing back everything that was dead. This includes long buried people and even the dinosaurs out of the museums. One bit had the dinosaurs running down 5th Avenue (I think).

One scene in particular stays in mind:

In the ensuing chaos, a group of vigilantes decide to hang a dirty politician. They did, he died, and the mob left. Unfortunately for the politician the virus kept bringing him back to life and then he would hang again and again, dying a horrible suffocating death. This went on and on and on...

Sound familiar to anyone?

I read a book called Fire where a scientist/vivisectionist found a trilobite and brought back dinosaurs, etc, and enhanced the intelligence of animals he experimented on. It was a long time ago, and the virus from the trilobite ends up IIRC, causing human sterility, among other things.

Not sure if this is it, and don't remember the author. Sorry!

Ohhhh, fingers crossed that you find something, Jcomp. I've looked and looked...

Hmmm, Fire sounds interesting, but I don't think that's the one.

(Ever hopeful)

I don't know, but it sounds pretty cool.

I would ask the folks over at the Shocklines forum. I suspect the group there would answer you in a matter of hours.

Yes, this is definitely FIRE by Alan Rodgers. I recently went through an identical wracking-of-brain experience trying to find this particular book, and I ended up finding Alan on Facebook... at which point the dots connected. :)

Good call! I read this one when I was in my pretty early teens, and the story has stuck with me ever since. There are scenes from this book that still make me feel squirmy, and that's not easy. :)
