Hi,

I have to winge and gripe about something.

This morning, I got up with the glorious feeling that I was about to put my last project into a trunk to season. I was going to start on a new project. I felt good. Even the birds were singing.

And, in a burst of optimism, I decided I would learn something about basic novel manuscript formatting. I would stick this big fellah in the trunk in proper manuscript form.

That's when everything started to go bad.

I checked this guide.

And this one

And they all agree that the header should be last name/title/page number, Though Cathy C's guide says to include the date.

It seems that Word 2007 will allow you to include either a page number, or text in a header, but not both. In addition, my word 2007 doesn't appear to have a help function any more. It say "F1" but that seems to do nothing.

Is there a decent word tutorial out there?

I have been trying to get this right for four hours.

And I am becoming a little frustrated.

I use Word 2007 and it does allow you to include both.

Gimme a minute; I just had to reboot. I'll be back once I've opened Word again.

Oh, and when I'm subbing to publishers I follow their individual guidelines. Agents? I do a right-justified header like this:

Surname / BOOK TITLE / page no.

When you go to the 'insert header' menu, you just start typing. Also, on the far left is the page number tab.

I think you've got it, but Insert--> Page number is different than inserting a page number in the Header/ Footer View.

Got to View Header/ Footer. Type your text. Then click the Insert Page Number button to add the page number to the header. You can use tabs to space out the information if you don't want it all on the right.
