I really enjoyed the one last year, and was wondering if we could do it again? Or is it too short notice?

I tried taking part last year.

I had the first draft done by May, so I'm probably not in the running.

Well, it takes three things....

1. Prizes - anyone want to donate any poetry books?

2. Theme - any writing prompts or just "christmas related"

3. Timeline - if we start now, when is the deadline to submit and voting period begin

Let's extend it to the New Year, or even after, twenty odd days is too few.

Theme - I don't think we should limit it to Christmas, how about just something about the year end, be it Christmas, or New Years, or the feeling of lonely togetherness that the holidays inspire, etc.

Prizes - I can't really help out here as I'm in China and the post here is exorbitantly expensive. I mean, unless someone wants a really kick-ass MS Paint drawing of a scary/cute sea monster.

Where are you going you terrific man?

And by terrific I mean "terror-rific" you get scarier every time I see you I swear to god. Or maybe I mean terrible, or territorial. Yes, definately tertiary.

oh. settle. down.

I'm off to Kenya next Wednesday and I won't be back until the 29th.

I'd be all in for something to do with year end, etc, as you say...as long as the deadline was AFTER my return. I'll be doing a lot of writing while there...and a lot of poetry writing. I'm going on safari and also to the beautiful Indian Ocean island of Lamu (and also kicking around Amsterdam for a bit....so I'll have lots to write about. It would be cool if I could submit...if this contest happens.

Please, let's NOT limit the topic to Christmas only. Not all of us celebrate it. (My husband and I do both Xmas and Chanukah, because he grew up with the one and I grew up with the other.) This year, I don't get any time off at all, so my "celebration" will probably be limited to working from home that day. Bleah.

Bah humbug. Don't be surprised when the ghost of Jacob Marley turns up on your door knocker.

I think we should do this.

Let's start promoting it! Who do we talk to in order to do that? I don't know how to start a fracas over things.

Alright so how does this all sound?

AW Winter Poetry Contest

Theme: Anything Winter - Cold, holidays, New Years, think snowy times

Submission Period: 1/5 - 1/16

Voting Period: 1/17 - 1/23

Prizes: TBD - Like years in the past perhaps we open it up and ask for donations such as books and will award out the top places with a new library of books.

How does this all sound?

Sounds like you need either a judge or a vote collector and someone to donate starting prizes. IIRC Limeydawg did both last year - in fact the vast majority of prizes were from him, with just a few donated by others of us.

I can sit out of the contest and be a neutral vote collector. will just take the submissions and post them up and we have a week of blind voting.

I would be happy to organize the prizes as well - unless someone else wants to step up and take it over, i would so we can get the ball rolling -

I'd be willing to donate like 20 bucks towards ordering a book off of Amazon and sending it to one of the winners. I'd rather not mail anything though.

That's what I did last year. (I offered up one of Garrison Keillor's poetry anthologies and just had it sent directly from Amazon.)

This sounds great. But we should set a rule that if you enter, you must vote. And the voting should be for your top three, like last year.
