What weight of paper (gsm) should I use for submissions? The paper I use for drafts is a close kin to tracing paper, but I don't want to end up ordering card.

Whatever makes the print look crisp and readable and doesn't dissolve in the reader's hands. I use 24 lb, myself.
20 lb is standard copy paper - I don't think using that would be an issue. 24 lb is a good choice too.
The higher your weight, the heavier your paper. Cover stock starts around 65 lb. - your really heavy card stocks are around 110 lb.

24 lb white for everything--most everything. But I use cotton rag 28 lb ivory paper for the single sheet of the query letter.

24lb. I also like to use at least 92 white paper. I use a fancy linen, 28lb paper for cover letters/queries.

Wow, looks like 24 lb. is the average. I've always used 20 lb., but (the ether is weird) the other day I was looking at the manuscript I was revising and noticed that I could see the print of the page underneath the page I was reading bleeding through. I tried to make myself stop noticing, but it still bugged me.
I've been using 90gsm. I'm not sure what the conversion ratio is, but standard copier paper is 80gsm, and 100gsm is another commonly available weight. The 100 is nicer paper, but I'm sending most submissions by airmail to the states, so don't want to end up paying too much for it and figure 90gsm is good enough.
OK, just looked up the conversion ratio and 24lb (which is, for the uninitiated like myself, the weight of a full ream) works out to 90gsm, so looks like most folks agree with me.
