I'm trying as best I can to remain calm and focused and keep plodding away with my writing, but, truth be told, I'm sitting on pins and needles and going absolutely nuts.

About 1-1/2 weeks ago, I signed onto AW and had a private message waiting that read "project interest." Hmmmm, I thought to myself. What's this? I opened it up, and it was a message from a new agent at a very well-established children-only agency. She said she had recently read the chapter of SWEETNESS I had posted in SYW and really liked it. She invited me to submit additional chapters to her. I sent three more chapters. A couple of days later, she wrote back saying how much she was enjoying the book and asked me to send the full manuscript. She then asked what else I had completed or was working on. I gave her a run-down of a few things. She wrote back saying to feel free to submit those as well. I sent her a full copy of my supernatural thriller, the first chapter of another MG I'm working on and a picture book. She wrote back saying she received them.

Now, I realize it hasn't been long at all, but I still can't help but feel a little anxious. I mean, considering how fast she went through the first few chapters of SWEETNESS, I would imagine she's finished with the book by now. Yet I haven't heard anything else from her. I'm trying to remain optimistic, but a part of me feels like her enthusiasm has waned and she's now thinking of a way to let me down easy after getting my hopes way, way up.

Yeah, I know. I'll drive myself crazy thinking about it. But I can't help it. No one has ever taken interest in my work like this before.

Hmm, as I haven't even gotten that far, I don't suppose there's much I can offer here apart from my best wishes, but you can be sure you have those. Good luck, Hedgetrimmer!

Give her some time, Hedge. :) It's only been a week.

Hang in there, and good luck! My fingers are crossed for you!

Thanks, both of you. I know 1-1/2 weeks is nothing in the publishing industry. I've had queries come back months later after I forgot I even sent them. The picture book I sent is one in a series of three. I've been trying to stay busy by working on the other two. If something does come of all this, I would love to have the whole series complete and ready to go.

Wow, that's really great news, Hedgetrimmer. I have to say, I've always enjoyed reading your stories. Yes, sometimes agents get through things quickly, but then other times a million other things can pop up on their to-do list and you have to be patient. Don't let your imagination go crazy with reasons why you haven't heard. (I'm a mother, and I do this all the time - imagine the worst. Nothing good comes from it).

If you want to commiserate with others in this situation, in the Rejection and Dejection section there's a thread called "The no news is no news purgatory thread."

And keep writing!

Thanks, Sheila. If I haven't heard anything in the next few weeks, I might just have to wander over there with all the other head scratchers.

You're serious? Agents look through SYW for potential clients? I thought that kind of thing was urban legend.

How cool is that? And don't worry about it taking a while, she probably had a contract to negotiate or something. (I'm being totally hypocritical, I'd be climbing the walls.)

Oh, Hedgetrimmer, I am so thrilled for you. Congratulations! Sweetness is the one about the little bird, isn't it? I just love your voice in that, and I remember the thread and all the advice about that very first sentence!

Golly, my heart is thumping just thinking about this. My fingers are crossed and my best wishes are with you.

Woot! Woot!

Sissy

Yeah, I've always known agents visit these boards and sometimes even post, though it's usually if someone is disparaging them and they feel the need to defend themselves. I never ever in my wildest dreams thought one would read my stuff here and contact me. I suppose stranger things have happened though.

Sissy, Dolores, thanks for the support. Yeah, SWEETNESS is the book about the girl trying to protect the birds from her neighbor's cat. I've rewritten it a thousand times, given up on it then pulled it back out. I don't suppose I'll ever give up on it completely until I finally see it between two covers.

That's great news! I'd just sit tight for a while. In the literary world patience is often rewarded.

Yeah, I blew an opportunity a couple of years ago after growing impatient. I certainly have no plans of shooting myself in the foot again. I just needed some understanding ears.

I TOLD YOU SO!!!

(okay, I had to get that out of my system first.)

Here's one possible reason it's taking a little longer:

She loves it. LOVES it. So, because she's a new agent with an established agency, she has to run it by the more experienced agents who mentor her, before she can make you an offer. And they are a bit more busy than she is, have their own clients to take care of first, etc.

I know of one agency, maybe the one you're working with, where the agents meet once a week and talk about the projects they're considering. Even the senior agent will pass on a project if the rest of the group questions its marketability (happened to a friend of mine). So you might have to wait at least until she has that meeting.

I think if her enthusiasm had waned, you'd be getting the thanks-but-no-thanks letter, not silence. Silence is golden. Be patient.

And I'm very happy about the news. And wondering what I've posted recently... the good stuff? or not?

Yeah, I thought about that too, that perhaps she's passed it on to her boss for a second opinion. I've also wondered if maybe she's feeling editors out on an informal basis. I actually read an agent's blog in which she said before signing a new client, she made some phone calls to editors first just to see if it was even worth bringing someone new into the stable. But who knows? All I can do now is hope for the best and stay busy with one of my current projects.

Hey, if nothing else, you KNOW you got something good there! Best of luck. Go take up a hobby or something to keep yourself busy. Maybe knitting straight-jackets...

Congrats and good luck!

I took a minute to sit and think how difficult it must feel to be in your shoes.

I guess there's no way you can, "just sit tight for a while."

It's more like somehow find a way to sit tight.

Let us know when you do hear back, I think everyone is pulling for you!

Thanks, Clair. It really is encouraging that she's expressed so much enthusiasm about the book. Agents are always saying how important it is to find someone who is really excited about your work.

Mware, I'll certainly let everyone know what happens.

Based on the interest you got from the start, I doubt the agent would suddenly lose interest altogether. Whatever is slowing her down is probably due to someone else in the agency. Keep writing and grit your teeth. She'll get back to you. If you haven't heard something after 3 months, shoot off a polite email asking for a status update. :)

You gave the agent a lot to read. Give her time! Plus, yes, she probably has to have a senior agent read that big stack of brilliant storytelling as well.

Your news made my day. Sweetness is one of the best things I've ever had the good fortune to enjoy on this site. I've loved it from the first.
Obviously, this new agent knows a good thing when she sees it.

Like you, I would be climbing the walls and checking my email every thirty seconds. But, be patient. I think Judy's scenario is right.

Best of luck! I can't wait to hear the good news.

Michael

Hedge:

I just read Nathan Bransford's blog entry for today, and it's about the waiting game . Interestingly, when pitching his own novel, it took him exactly 1.5 weeks of waiting to get panicky. Naturally, I thought of you. :)

(I've been referencing Nathan a lot... hmmm...)

Keep on hanging on!

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I recall querying Nathan about my book two years ago. He said the voice was nice but that the first chapter didn't have enough tension. At the time, I had no idea what he was talking about. Now I get it.

Smish, I just read Nathan's blog post. He captured my anxiety perfectly. He seems like a very considerate and empathetic agent. Anyone would be hellalucky to join his team.
