Ok - so we got Kindles for the boys and all is well. I've downloaded a bunch of books from Amazon, but people tell me I can get any ebook and it will work onthe Kindle. Is that true? How do I go about downloading them onto the Kindle? thanks for your help!

When I first read about the Kindle coming out, you could supposedly email a file somewhere and it would end up on your Kindle. There ought to be instructions on how to "upload" a file to a Kindle somewhere, if they haven't changed that.

No, not any book but there are other formats besides the Kindle format.

You can convert text and html files to various ebook formats (Google Calibre and Stanza) then upload the book from your computer using the U.S.B. cable that comes with the Kindle.

1. Find a text or html file you want to be an ebook.

2. Go here

http://www.lexcycle.com/download

3. Download Stanza for Mac or Windows (it's free while it's in Beta)

4. Make an ebook (or download one from Lexicyle's site.

(I don't have Windows, so can't help with this part; launch the Stanza Application and look at the menus; use File to open the text or html file; use View to set layout and fonts).

5. Open the book in Stanza on your computer.

6. Connect your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable that came with your Kindle

7. In Stanza on your computer, choose File->Export Book As->Amazon Kindle

8. Browse to the Kindle on the via the standard Windows Save dialog.

*The Kindle will appear in the dialog with the name you gave it when you first registered it.

9. Follow the screen instructions (I don't have a Kindle, either)

There's some FAQs here: http://www.lexcycle.com/faq

You can also email the file to your Kindle accounts. However, I'm not sure if it's restricted to text or HTML only (I know you can do that with PDF but the result is iffy, depending on the conversion).

Calibre is the best way for non-DRM-protected files. It can convert a lot of different file formats.

Yes, I have emailed files to my kindle. I sent them as PDF's. Amazon gives you a free email address to send them to. In a few minutes they'll be sent back in the proper format for Kindle, then you just load it onto the Kindle via the USB cable.

I've done it many times.

If you have wifi/Whispernet it will be downloaded to your Kindle within a few seconds. You don't need the USB. However, there is a cost associated with it: $0.15. Pretty minimal unless you have huge amount of files to convert.
