It's not due out intil February, but they are agressively trying to sell this movie right now with serious saturation of the trailer, magazaine ads, and with 3-D movie lobby displays a full five months before hand. Meanwhile, it's based on a book. Now I haven't read the book, I haven't read the script, and I know NOTHING about this movie except that I have seen the trailer a dozen times already.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdumGs1qoXM

And based on what I see just in the trailer, I want to make a prediction as to what this movie is REALLY about, and even how it will all end....

-- SPOILER --

.... I suspect that the Leonardo DiCaprio character is NOT really a US Marshall, and is instead one of the patients at the hospital. And that the severe delusion that he is a US Marshall is part of his sickness, and the Ben Kingsley character (the chief psychiatrist in charge of the mental hospital) is orchestrating this masquerade (the deception of letting DiCaprio believe he's a US Marshall) in order to help treat whatever is mentally wrong with the DiCaprio character. So the big surprise ending is going to be: you're just Crazy, Leo, and this nice doctor is merely trying to help you.

Just my guess. I could be wrong, but it's my guess.

So, anyone here read the book? Am I right?

I need to repeat that I am only making this guess based upon the trailer. And if I am correct, then that's a mighty sad statement as to the lack of originality of the film, and an equally sad statement as to its attempt to give us a killer "surprise" ending in the vein of The Sixth Sense and Psycho and The Stepford Wives and Soylent Green, etc.

But if I'm wrong ... meh ... the film doesn't appeal to me. (Seen one mysterious crime puzzle, seen 'em all).

Yeah, I agree, more or less. When I read the book, I had an idea what was coming as I got near the end, but thought, "no, I must be wrong, he won't really do THAT kind of ending" (the equivalent of "it was all a dream"), but sure enough, he did. I've seen an interview with Lehane where he was very proud of the ending, and the last time I looked on Amazon there were a number of positive reviews. For me it was one of the few times I really would have liked to have thrown the book across the room.

I did throw my book. Then I glared at my wife. She read it first and loved it. I turned to her and said, "I am never trusting your taste in books again. Ever."

I was planning on reading it since I like his stuff, usually, but after seeing these 'spoilers' I am very glad that I don't have to waste my time. That really would have pissed me off.

I liked the book, myself. It's not Lehane's best (that would be "Mystic River") but it was still a good read. Not many people anticipated the twist.

When I saw the trailers, I saw the twist, of course, but I couldnt' decide if that was because I knew what it was or because they telegraphed it.

Maryn, always different
