I am sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find it. I have placed quotes throughout my book that have to do with death and loss. These are mostly poems or proverbs. I have several Shakespeare quotes as well as proverbs like, "There is no death, only a change of worlds", that sort of thing. Do I need to provide any kind of reference for these in my book and what is the format for doing that? Sorry, just very new at all of this. Thanks in advance!

Did your publisher give you editorial standards to follow? If not, I'd ask your editor if they prefer footnotes, end notes for each chapter, or end notes for the whole book.

The answer as to the content of the notes/attributions is going to be different depending on whether you're writing a scholarly work or a broad-market consumer work. For a scholarly work (or one where you want your research to be taken seriously), then complete attributions (author, title, page, publisher, year, etc.) are important. For a mass-market work, then just title and author should be sufficient. If you are expecting that your readers will recognize the quotes and don't want to give away the source for those who don't recognize them, then don't attribute any of them.
