..if part of my marketing experience includes doing a lot of speaking on an unrelated topic to my book? It is in conjunction with a decently prestigious grant program.

Should I throw that into my proposal?

I'd throw it in as evidence that you're an experienced speaker and therefore COULD give lots of talks to hawk the new book. It could also help if you have a mailing list of people from your old talks that you could use for sending out flyers about your new book.

Im kinda on the other side... if I were an editor/publisher I'd probably think its just resume stuffing. No offense or anything... Just my $0.02. I just think it would open up the question: "What does this have to do with your writing" and that could be an uncomfortable question on a phone call or something. :)

I think it depends how you mention it. Keep it brief and make the relevance explicit.

Maybe say something like: "As part of my job, I have had extensive training and experience in public speaking. I would be able to use these skills in promoting this book. I would actively seek out opportunities to present to groups such as XX."

I completely agree with what wallfull said.

My agent definitely wanted to know I was comfortable in front of a crowd...

Certainly public speaking even on an unrelated subject is a transferrable skill. I think it definitely is a feather in your cap to show that you have the ability to talk to people about your book.
