New to Horror

I've written fantasy almost my entire life with a few sci-fi ones. Now, I'm looking for something new that can be a fresh new challenge for me. So, as the topic says, I'm new to writing horror, can anyone tell me the most important elements in writing a horror story?

Based from the stories I've read, I could at least tell, (1) I need to have a creepy atmosphere, (2) a really bad and scary situation - does that include, say a lone store clerk is attacked by robbers and one of them has taken a "special interest" toward her? (3) a really mind-blowing plot twist.

What else should I know when writing horror stories? Thanks in advance.=)

Well, maybe "member" wasn't the best choice of words, but, hey, we're all friends here.

Regarding your question, my answer (and I'm far from an expert) I'd say that the horror of the situation is dependent upon the situation your heroine finds herself in. With the clock ticking, she has to find some way to escape the thugs taking control of her store without attracting the attention of the one who has special designs on her. She's got to survive long enough for the cops to arrive or for the chance to escape. I can hear the clock ticking.

This type of story has the potential to be very suspenseful and that, some would say, is the essence of horror.

Now, go write the thing! Now. Don;t wait. Just get it done.
