Disney announced today the fourth Pirates movie, ON STRANGER TIDES is due in 2011. Johnny Depp will be back as Captain Jack. The article made no mention of Knightley or Bloom reprising their roles, but I think that's unlikely. Bloom, at least, has expressed in the past he's done with the franchise.

Sometimes, you should just say no to sequels...

I'd like to see it a little darker.

As for Bloom, he's probably tired of being cast in sword fights. Face it: he's most famous for LOTR and POTC. He never gets to play 'normal' people. Blackhawk Down is the only movie I remember him in that was any good and wasn't an "Orlando with a Sword" vehicle.

True. IIRC, he's also taking a break from big-budget pictures in general. I think At World's End was the last time he hit the big screen. He filmed a movie not too long ago, but he's only a minor character, and otherwise I heard he was doing stage plays in London. Can't blame him.

He was actually quite good in the UNCUT Directors version of Kingdom of Heaven too. But I can see him trying to distance himself from period pieces.

But like John Wayne - the consumate 'cowboy' - I don't think Bloom will ever shed it. Best to acknowledge it - BANK IT - and make your indy flix for 'art' on the side.

I agree with the 'playing to your strengths' advice. He's so GOOD at the swordfights. Troy sucked and I loathed the female who played opposite him in KoH, but he was OK in both. I understand the need to stretch his acting muscles, but make some money. Nothing wrong with being admired and lusted after.

From what I read I think a lot of it just had to do with Hollywood burnout, which is understandable. Back-to-back shoots for LOTR and then another for Pirates 2 & 3, the latter which were not well-coordinated at all (they were filming without finished scripts, a major delay due to hurricanes, and they'd come in for the day not knowing what scenes they were filming). Anyway, especially with the last film, the franchise doesn't need him anymore.

Johnny Depp alone is what moves ticket sales.

Has anyone read the Tim Powers novel this film is rumored to be based on?

Can't they just do the logical thing and ditch the Caribbean and just set the next one in space?

Then again, I'm one of the insane people who thinks Treasure Planet was *awesome*.

But not quite as awesome as Titan A.E

Srsly. Take a page from the Hannah-Barbera playbook and start attaching "...In Outer Space!" to all their vehicles.

I would have like to have seen it skirt the more fantastical elements of the movie rather then stick to them. The first and second movies were cool, because while fantasy played a big part, the movies had a "grounded in reality" feel to them. The third one just kind of went all over the place and made plot holes so big they couldn't be filled.

I agree. The fantasy was great in the first one. The second one a little less so, the third one really less so.

Also, if Johnny Depp was in space and we got annoyed with his hammy acting, we could space him!

Ha, try and be faux-charming while your blood boils out of your ears.

Bloody pirate.

Ooh good - me and the Old Man were talking about this the other day. And saying it'd be great, provided Orlando Bloom and Keira bleeding Knightly weren't in it so we got more Jack :D

I don't know about milking it. Johnny's said more than once he'd make as many sequels as they can come up with scripts for purely because he feels he was born to play Jack and it's great fun for him.

Seeing as how Pirates figuratively jumped the shark with the third film, I'm hoping for some literal shark-jumping in the fourth film.

A 4th Pirates movie is about as necessary as Indiana Jones 4 or Die Hard 4.
Nothing against pirates, but let's have some other story altogether. Bruce Willis vs. Somali pirates, anybody? No, I don't think so.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking, actually. Despite the third one being nowhere near as good as the first, I did like some of it, especially where they left the Will and Elizabeth characters. If they can go back and capture the feel of the first one, then I'm fine with a fourth one. It might even make up for some of the crap they did in the second and third ones.

If any of you ever make a major motion picture, please don't start filming before the scripts are finished. Please?

Brillig in the slithy toves...
Considering the last one ended with Cap'n Jack going after the Fountain of Youth, and they showed Turner version 2.0 with the kid at the end, they could easily get rid of every character except Jack, Barbosa, and the monkey and start a new storyline with Will/Lizzie's son.

But if I so much as hear the word Krakken, I'm throwing something at the screen. Preferably one of the writers.

No, they did that with the third one. That one sucked so badly, I threw out the DVDs for the others when I got home.

Gah. I have a huge aversion to these kind of sequels. I kind of forgot they threw the kid in at the end of the last one. As if kids make everything happier, so it's the default "end" of the story. Cheap.

ctually, I'm not happy about this. I'd rather see Depp appear next as Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows.

You'll get them both in 2011, then, and you can just ignore Pirates. Dark Shadows might even have an earlier release date and you'll get your wish. ;)
