When you write, does it sometimes make you giggle?

Some of the humorous moments in my writing has made me giggle hysterically and even smirk humorously. Have any of you ever gone through this?

Have you ever hurrayed a MC for something they've done (either in something you've read or written) that gets even with a protagonist?

I find myself smirking and in fits of giggles lately when I either write or read my work. I have found myself to be much more humorous in my writing than I realized which provides a nice little comic relief for the genre I write in (both thriller, horror and erotica).

I do that a lot. Hubby will say, "What's so funny?" & I'll say, "You won't believe what whoever just said."

"Um.... you wrote it."

"Nuh - uh. He just said it."

"uh-huh."

He gives up understanding my writing

Gosh, yes. I'll read over something I wrote several months prior and have a good laugh at some use of local dialect I put in a conversation.

Usually the funniest things are little quirks that I've seen real people exhibit that I've taken and caricatured.

Although, I sometimes get a laugh out old pieces of work--it's hilarious how bad they are.

Yeah, I've written stuff that makes me giggle. It's nice to look at something old and find the joke is still funny.

Yep, especially when I'm rereading something and forgot about a particular line or scene. I love it when the things my characters say/do makes me laugh out loud.

Yup. All the time. I used to get weird looks for it. :tongue

I also do the stare-into-space-and-giggle bit too when I'm piecing together new scenes or dialogues in my head.

Those are my favorite writing moments, and when I write the fastest because I'm so excited and pleased by the scene unrolling in front of me. Wish I could get that feeling more often...

Yes, often. I laugh anywhere when something I've written or just thought of tickles my funny bone. Sometimes I'll test something out loud, laugh, and look up to see a puzzled coworker. Oops!

I have a line in my book that makes me laugh every time I read it. It's my favorite in the whole book. Good lines are good lines, even if they're ours

Ah, I always worry when this happens to me, and it happens often. Someone once wrote that if you really laugh at your own writing, it's going to be one of those darlings you need to murder.

I take that with a grain of salt, but still have to stop and really look at why I laughed at something to decide if it really belongs there or not.

Hey, I figure if I don't laugh at it, nobody will. At least it was good for my digestion. :ROFL:

heee hee.... loved that line.

I find that I can smile at a blog of mine, but somehow humor is eluding me in this first draft manuscript. I do have whoops of joy over some subplots or characters, I do cackle from time to time with glee, but...nary a giggle over a stitch of humor.

*shrug* It'll come, right? (She took the silence as universal agreement that it would come, and ran off to get her writing done for the day.)

Someone seems to be right.

Apparently, what makes me laugh in my own writing just irritates and offends readers. I wrote out an exercise to help a fellow writer work through a story problem, and it made me laugh so I posted it to SYW -- not because I thought it was publishable but because I found it funny. My learned colleagues all said: wtf? WTF!?

Oh, yes. I really get into my stories... Provided you don't get so into a scene that you refuse to see any problems it might have, I don't think there's a problem. I seem to recall a 'rule' of writing that states, 'If it bores you, it'll bore the reader,' so why shouldn't the opposite be true?

Yep, I giggle, although "chortle" might be a better word.

I figure if I'm writing something which makes me laugh, it's got a better shot at making the readers laugh, too. What's also good is when I'm reading excerpts to my writing group and they laugh in the right places.

I like spending hours writing a very serious dramatic story and going back and finding hundreds (seriously, hundreds) of unconscious dick and fart jokes. I also used the word "erection" to describe a tower once. I think I was going for something horribly Freudian for that though.

I laugh at my writing all the time. I can't help it; my characters are hilarious. My betas always laugh at the same parts. And I once posted a snippet of my more humorous dialogue on another writing forum, and everyone there thought it was funny too, so I think my humor translates well.

Of course I do!

Writing is a lot like those old memories that make you smile every now and then. They're yours and it's personal.

Anyway, I laugh a lot - sometiems at how bad my writing is and other times with how funny a particular character/line is (since they're loosely based on reality).

I also get erections depending upon the scene and desccriptions but maybe I've taken a step too far.

Occasionally, yes. It happens most often when I write something that's more 'character' than 'me'. I let go, I get in the zone, and let them take over.

Meh. Call me pretentious. That's how I best describe it.

tt42 says I'm good at 'banter' but sometimes I wonder if it reads like I'm being too clever. Like, "No-one speaks like that in real life, do they?" Well, apparently my characters too.

They have the advantage of being able to edit themselves, whereas we all suffer from "Why didn't I say that at the time?" syndrome.
