Let's get it on. We need poems, and we need workers. Step right up.

What it's about:
Up to five poems from each AW poet; make them good ones. This is an inclusive exercise, and we'll self-publish.

What to submit, and do so in one package:
- Your poems (up to five)
- Confirmation of permission to publish, and that the poems are unpublished and have no prior claim on publishing rights
- Brief (two paragraphs max) personal bio
- Name as you want it to appear in the book (we'll probably include both username and RL name - advise if you wish otherwise)
- The avatar, or similar-size pic, that you'd want by your name (in case it's used in the book layout)

Submit the above via email, to AWPoetrySubmissions(at)gmail(dot)com. The deadline is TBA, but will not be earlier than the end of July.

So, we'll need help with:
- cover art
- design and layout
- artwork? up to the editors; liaise w/design and layout
- proofreading
- general editor
- preface/introduction (either one of us, or a guest; the general editor will be responsible for the call)

Contact me via PM by June 25 if you want to help with any of these roles.

Is there a line-length limit? Will the layout adapt to poems that are longer than a single page? I don't think any of mine will fall into that category, but I just thought I'd ask.

Line limit? Not per se.

More than a page? Why not?

The editor(s) reserve the right to make, er, editorial decisions, but in my view, form follows function; come up with the poems first, and the layout will be conceived to best reflect the poems.

Can I do some artwork? I consider myself a halfway competent painter, despite being only a 16-year-old.

Note: I'm definitely not a professional artist, nor have I taken any formal art course other than my GCSE. So, if someone with a MFA or something steps up, I'll step aside.

The layout is up to the editors, but the purpose of the book is to get people involved.

What did you have in mind - work you've already done, graphics to suit the layout, other?

No theme. Bring what you like (again, editors reserve rights to be selective); play to your strong suit. The point is for people to be in!

I don't know about work I've already done -- depends if it fits the layout. I don't know exactly what kind of graphics you require; I was imagining more along the lines of paintings to accompany the poem. Or to illustrate a theme, if the anthology is grouped into chapters, each with a certain theme. So, I'll probably have to work with the layout editor, right?

We've done absolutely nothing yet. There is no layout editor at this point. But it sounds like you've got ideas, which is really the best place to start!

The elite, all-volunteer publishing squad and what they've offered to do, as of now:

Exir - art
caseyquinn - editing
p.h.delarran - proofreading
Magdalen - proofreading
Nix - tba (maybe layout?)
mscelina - editing

Good on ya, everyone.

There is also an open question (thanks, Ambrosia) about rights: will the poet retain all rights?

To be candid, I have to make sure I understand what that means. But the answer will be that, wherever possible, the decision will fall in favour of the poets.

Just a wee follow up: will publication in AW's book mean it will be unlikely for a poem to subsequently be published elsewhere (ie magazines)?

(Not that I've got the gonads to actually submit a poem anywhere, but I'm thinking of one day growing a spine.)

Well, once published in the book you will no longer have first print publication rights since it was published - So it would hurt your chances of getting the poem at any place that requires the poem to be prevously unpublished or requires first print rights

I'm a newbie as far as rights go, but the way I understand it, we'd just want the publishing rights for the period of publication - so we can print the book; the poets would retain all other rights. After the book goes out of print, the poets get the publishing rights back.

Greater clarity would help, if anyone is better versed in publication rights.

Hope that helps!

We would be asking for non exclusive first print rights - in your OP you are asking for:

unpublished poems (first publishing rights)
non exclusive (means that the poet can submit the poems anywhere they want, they are simply giving us permission to include the poem in our collection)
print rights (we are putting out a print collection)

if we are also doing an ebook, we would need first print and electric rights -

As of now, Casey's the General Editor - he'll put together the team and take the book forward.

I know he'll do a great job.

In your dreams
How many have submitted work so far? I hope I'm not the only one!

Don't worry, I'm going to be submitting some poems too. Then it'll be just you and me with submitted work. Maybe they can publish it as a flyer.;)
