I contacted a Hollywood producer and he said send the movies. We agreed on an amount. After which I forgot him. Then he sent me an email asking what happened to the deal. To keep my word, I got the check made in US dollars and sent it to him along with the DVD of my work. He emailed me when he received the check and the DVD and said he‘ll reply to the content a week later.

What does reply to the content a week later mean?

He'll take a look at what you sent him and then he'll reply a week from either the time he received your package, or from the time he last contacted you (could be either).

Just out of curiosity, why are you sending a producer a check?

He's charging you??

Yeah, why exactly are you sending the guy a check? The only way I can see you being charged a fee is if this guy is a producer's representative. But that typcially occurs after the rep has screened your product and you've signed some sort of deal.

Man, I hope you're not getting ripped off.

Ace, that part about your having sent him a check has all my red lights blinking. What's up with that? This "Hollywood" producer doesn't by any chance have a Nigerian address, does he?

There are plenty of scammers in hollywood, they could have a legit address right in the USA. An address doesn't equal scam, or make it not one either. Scams happen everywhere.

I know. I was merely tossing a very dark and sardonic joke into the mix of this otherwise very troubling report from Ace. And it was a joke whose punchline was entirely contingent upon my being able to successfully get people to make an association between Ace's situation and the classic Nigerian e-mail scams currently out there. But I guess I failed in that endeavor.

Maybe my joke would've come across better if it had been voiced by this guy:

In the joke sense I totally get it, but I wanted to throw out there that just because it isn't in nigeria doesn't mean it isn't a scam.

Ace,

After the trouble you had with the DVD's, you need to be careful. Not everyone who sounds helpful is trying to help you. Sometimes they just want your money.

The good thing about cheques is that they can be cancelled.

It means stop payment right now.

Ace. These two quotes above are indeed the answer to your question.

If this guy can get you to wait for one entire week, then that means he can count upon your not stopping payment on that check while he cashes it. So stop payment now BEFORE he "replies to your content a week later."

It's almost always unsettling when someone you needs takes time out to contact you.

You need a producer who's after your money to make contact like you need a hole in the head.

Producers don't 'take' money off writers. They 'make' money off them.

What happened with this, Ace?

he thought I was talented but the work was not for him. you don't need to be told the metaphor.

my latest is, I have sent the 4 films's screener and trailers of the same and poster art to a producer's rep. he too has been paid a non-refundable. he did make me sign a contract.

he also agreed to work to raise a finance and distribution deal for another trilogy of mine. again for a fee non-refundable and % in the amount of finance raised and % in sales.

I did find out from another website, he is genuine.

I am fed up with the same thing happening to me. my mother has acutally taken a loan. so I have taken a firm decision to get into import/export logistics as I have an MBA in international business as my backup. if the finance deal is closed I will complete the films if not, I will stick to first repaying the loan.

now, at another place. two screenplays out of 16 of mine were given a consider. they told me they would be surprised to hear good or bad news until the end of Sundance. I am hopuing they'll be able to sell for a minumim guild wages. even that'll be enough monetary incentive for me to work on writing screenplays. I have piled up some thirty odd outlines. and so far only 2 have reached final fade out. third one is on process.

the grind ratings of the screen plays that were later are getting better ratings than the former ones. so there is improvment in my writing. they do think there are 5 mnore that are worht a shot but they later told me the 5 would be good writing samples but expecting a sale might be a bit too much.

Reading your blog isn't mandatory, ace. People have busy lives.

And perhaps if you included a link to it in your signature, people would know where to find it.

Nobody who asks you for a fee upfront is genuine, Ace.

People who can make deals for you do it on a percentage basis. Stop sending money to scammers.

I was going to ask if this is standard in the field (it's not standard in fiction/non-fiction publishing, but I thought maybe it was different here) but I guess I got my answer. Why do you continue to pay these people?

I did find out from another website, he is genuine.
#1:Just because someone on a website thinks he is genuine, doesn't mean that he is genuine.

#2: Just because he is genuine doesn't mean that it's a good investment of your money.

I am fed up with the same thing happening to me.
Then change strategies.

So far, every piece of advice here has been to improve your scripts (which is very cheap to do - in fact, free!) before trying to get them made.

You keep ignoring this advice. And you are fed up with the same thing happening to you each time.

Screenwriting can be extremely enjoyable - it is like doing a crossword puzzle when you are free to move everything around and have total control.

So enjoy the experience - and use the opportunity to get some good scripts down on paper. Get out and chat with other film makers in your area ... there must be dozens who like Hollywood style films.

Good luck - I hope things improve.

I want to be firm on this, this time

YOU CALL THAT ADVICE?

You keep ignoring this advice. And you are fed up with the same thing happening to you each time.

SORRY, I HAVE BEEN DEEMED CRAZY FOR A DECADE NOW BY PEOPLE IN MY AREA, EVEN WHEN I WENT TO A FILM SCHOOL, EVERYBODY WAS BUSY PULLING MY LEGS, INCLUDING THE FACULTIES

Good luck - I hope things improve.

HOPE - IS A DANGEROUS THING TO LIVE ON MY FRIEND,

RIGHT NOW, I DON'T FEEL ANY HOPE SO I CAN'T EVEN WRITE A WORD, MY MIND SAYS YOU GET MONEY OR NO NEED TO FOLLOW THIS, AS I HAVE TOLD, I HAVE SOME 30 ODD OUTLINES THAT NEED TO REACH FINAL FADE OUT BUT I SHOULD BE PAID OR ELSE NO POINT, IF I WANT PEOPLE WHO INVEST IN MY MOVIES TO SEE GOOD RETURN FOR THEIR INVESTMENT THEN I DON'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH ME MAKING SOME MONEY MYSELF.

I DID TELL MY THOUGHTS ABOUT QUITTING TO A FILM-MAKER FRIEND OF MINE. HE SAID I DID NOT PUT THE RIGHT EFFORTS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I COULD HAVE FOUGHT WITH HIM OVER THIS BUT NOW I THINK WHY SHOULD A GUY WHO KEEPS ON MAKING MISTAKES GET A SHOT TO BE THE NUMERO UNO. LET THE BETTER MAN WIN.

I FELT REALLY BAD WHEN MY MOM HAD TO TAKE A LOAN AGAINST HER GOLD JEWELRY. THAT WAS WHEN I HAD IT,

I SHOULD GET PAID, I MEAN THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T INVESTED 1/4TH OF MY INVESTMENT IN TERMS OF MONEY, SLEEPLESS NIGHTS WRITING, CONTACTING PEOPLE WITH AVAILABLE RESOURCES, IN FACT THEY BITHC ABOUT THE PEOPLE THEY WORK WITH (NO INTEGRITY). THEY ARE PAID, WHY THE FUCK NOT ME?

Ace, we all want you (and every other filmmaker) to get paid.

But paying people who claim they're going to get you paid is not the way to do it.
