I've been using Writers Net and Google as my primary sources for locating agents. Also been browsing B&N, reading the agent "shout outs" by published hx fn writers.

Writers Net seems to provide uneven info. Thoughts about other sources?

Have you tried QueryTracker.net? They've got a pretty decent database with a lot external links to Publisher's Marketplace and the like.

Also try Agent Query and its Historical Fiction link. Caveat though: Some who say they accept HF specialize in HR. I recommend seeing their client list too because in some cases when they include HF they show no sales in that genre.

In today's market, I would advise branching out beyond those agents who rep HF. Especialy after what occured last week in publishing, there are that many fewer houses and editors for agents to submit to, and selling books is all about contacts.

I used agentquery.com and I queried agents who repped fiction, period. I looked for agents with a strong track record of selling fiction to the big houses.

It is an investment in time and $ to query widely. Your aim is to nab a quality agent who is engaged by your writing and in the story you have to tell. If you do that, then he/she will get it in front of the right people, no matter what the genre. Your chances increase when you cast a wide net.

Good luck! :Sun:

I took the names of agents who've attended the Historical Novel Conference (s) as a starting point. As least it proves a recent interest in the genre. Please post any other ideas you find out, as I'm right behind you.

I recommend agent query. Also useful, if you can afford it, is a subscription to Publisher's Marketplace. That tells you what agents are actually selling as opposed to what they'd like to sell.

Agentquery worked for me. Also - read Publisher's Weekly. If you find a review of a book like yours, look for the agent. They may be interested in yours.

Waddyathink??? Found a recent hx novel in my locale and period. Author says he's doing another. Should I query his agent? Wouldn't the agent be protective of her current client?

Yes, query, but if you mention the book he/she reps be sure you've read it. You don't have anything to lose in my opinion. I see the same agents pop up in sci fi and fantasy, some agents specialize in certain areas and have many authors in the same category. Good Luck.
