The Inciting incident...

I haven't had that happen to me yet............but I loved Rushmore.

Jaws for filmmaking and Braveheart as screenwriter.

Braveheart was the first movie that made me think about the script of a movie. Before then, it wasn't foremost in my mind. Since then, every movie I watch I think about the dialogue, format, pacing, etc. However, there have always been stories I've wanted to see as movies.

If I had to pick a pivotal moment . . . it would probably be after watching Jurassic Park. It was about the same time as Braveheart, and so the combination really got me thinking of the profession.

Filmmaking: Jaws.

Screenwriting: Ordinary People

I was twelve years old. I wrote down every single action and line of dialogue down in a note book and had my freinds reinact the whole thing.

"Dances with Wolves." For I admired how Costner's friend dedicated his time to piecing it all together, rewrite after rewrite and came up with a work of legend.

I didn't quite start that way. I got told to adapt a story into a screenplay. It turned into one of those "almost got sold!" tales that everyone has. At the same time it infected me with the screenwriting madness, for which there is no cure.

I got hooked on Russell Crowe after watching Gladiator. I wrote a script that contained my two favorite subjects, Crowe and horses.
Then, after actually studying the art of screenwriting I realized that the Russell Crowe character didn't work and I cut him!!
ha ha!

After that my husband mentioned to me that he would love to see one of his favorite songs made into a movie and suggested I adapt that.
So I worked up a script and am now in the process of trying to get the song writer to work with me.

I wish there was something to tell, it's not much of a story and it has a dud ending! Prepare to be bored... A pal from our online SF/F writing group with friendly contacts in the industry had arranged to make a private pitch to a bunch of producers/investors looking for a project. He had his own scripts ready to go, plus treatments and partials from a couple of pro pals, but felt his package was a little light. He remembered an SF story of mine which he'd loved, and ordered me to adapt it into a spec screenplay. Turn a 2k word short story into a 110-page screenplay in three weeks... huh, okay. Not easy, but it got written, and he liked it, and added it to his package and flew off to make his pitch. Everything got the thumbs-down, alas, except for this odd newbie script. Many excited emails flew back and forth as interest built up. His people loved it! Other investors were flying in! "They're all over this." Time trickled by with agonizing slowness. "They need a fax number." My natural inborn skepticism finally began to crack. "Get your passport ready." This was it! I girded my loins and prepared for instant success! "Deal's off, they walked away." Just like that! A burst fantasy balloon. I shrugged off my disappointment and wrote my next script.

Told you it was a dud ending! Three years later, I'm still trapped in this mental hell called screenwriting. I've been trying my damnedest to get back to writing prose but it ain't easy. I'm infected. Or nuts. Not sure which.

That dingo has a lot to answer for! We ever meet face to face, he's in trouble.

So I worked up a script and am now in the process of trying to get the song writer to work with me.
