Shades of Dawn

We are in the midst of an identity revolution. From census forms to job applications, multi-ethnic and multi-racial people are proclaiming their identities, demanding that all facets of their heritage are acknowledged and celebrated.

But there are still serious challenges facing the multi-ethnic/racial child in a predominantly homogenous world. Hatred and ignorance can cause particular crises if a love and sense of self are not nurtured.

We are compiling an anthology for multi-ethnic/racial children between the ages of 9 and 12 to help ease their passage to adulthood; projected publication is December 2005. All media will be represented, including essays, short stories, poems, photography and paintings. Only submissions from multi-ethnic or multi-racial writers and artists will be accepted. Work must focus on one of the following areas:

v&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp owning your identity;
v&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp learning about your heritage and culture;
v&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp loving your appearance;
v&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp overcoming racism and ignorance; and
v&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp celebrating a multi-cultural, multi-racial society

Essays and short stories must be no more than 4000 words, double-spaced in 12-point font. Poetry may be single-spaced, but should also be printed in a 12-point font. Include name, address, phone number and e-mail address on the first page. Multiple submissions can be made. Previously published material will be accepted; please indicate where and when it was published. The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2004.

If your work is chosen for publication, you will be asked to submit a brief bio and a photograph. Upon publication, writers and artists whose work is selected will receive $100 plus 2 complimentary copies.

Send electronic submissions to [email protected] or mail manuscripts to: Candice Evans, Casaeva, 2525 N. 10th St., #210, Arlington, VA 22201. Include a SASE if you want your submission returned. Photography and art must be submitted electronically.

Thanks Hannah, that's great.

Looks like a good project - are you thinking of submitting?

cluelessspicycinnamon

Perhaps. It applies to me, but I"ll have to think of a good story first.
