A writer friend of mine, Jamie Denton, was recently diagnosed with cancer. Like many working writers, she has no health insurance. So we've organized a variety of fundraisers for her. One of them is an auction that is featuring critiques by bigwig editors and agents. The main homepage for the fundraiser is www.duetsauthors.com .

The auction is here:

Now, while we're obviously romance writers doing this, many of those agents handle other forms of fiction. Google them, check out the types of stuff they're interested in, and then consider making a bid on one of their crits. If they like your stuff, then you've got a foot in the door. I'm hoping that they also realize that a crit means they tell you what's not to their liking if they don't want to see more of it. :)

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this, and maybe check it out and bid on something. Jamie really appreciates it.

Just giving this a bump. Hey, it's not for me, it's for a sick friend! :)

Thanks for letting me post this here.

In the agent auctions, what happens? How do you contact the agent? Is it face-to-face, or something else???

You're buying a read/crit of your work - 25 pages and a synopsis. It's a way to get your work read faster. Needless to say, your work still has to speak for itself, but this is a way to bypass the slush/query stage. Say, for example, the agent you want will only look at a query letter first, and you think you stink at writing a query letter. You'd really rather they see the actual WORK. This can give you that opportunity.

You get to send them the material and put REQUESTED MATERIAL on your cover letter and envelope.

So, it's not a face-to-face. It's a chance to get your work in front of their face. :)

Thanks for asking!

Guys, this is for charity, and you get something in return (even if the agent tells you you shouldn't quit you day job)... it's a great cause.

I'm considering bidding, actually. But I have to whip my WIP into shape first. :)

Thanks, Susan.
