I posted a draft of a (40,000 word) story online.

Before you freak out, they're on a blog and the chapters are protected under 'Friends Only' privacy -- which means only people who I have friended on this blogging site can see it, and this is a select few people. That means that people searching google cannot find these chapters. They may be able to find a reference to them (such as, "I am working on X, will post later"), but they won't be able to find any actual writing.

I plan on taking the chapters down in about a month, as soon as I start secondary edits, anyway.

Do publishers care about this?

From what I understand (not a lawyer, nor do I watch them on TV), as long as it's under a password and not available to the general public, you don't have to worry about first publishing rights, which are what publishers are after. It'd be a different story if you were posting chapters weekly on a blog that anybody and their Uncle Judy and Aunt Lars could access.

I think you are safe.
Sill, I would never put a part of my WIP longer than 1 or 2 thousand words anywhere online.
