Which horror films and books are your least favorite?

Of all horror films I've seen so far, my least favorite is The Thing by John Carpenter. The reason I dislike it is because the gore reminds me of vicious spaghetti.

Perhaps if John Carpenter had adopted more of an Alfred Hitchcock approach then The Thing would have become one of my favorites as far as horror goes.

Then again, what do I know about making movies.

I didn't like Ghost Ship. I also just finished Koontz's Midnight, and didn't care for it, either. I did make it all the way to the end, though, and that's something.

My least favorite horror film was The Grudge. I was bored to death during that movie.

Really? I really enjoyed that one, but it was better in a theater than as a rental.

LOL, Blue, I saw it in the loudest surround-sound theater I've ever been in. I nearly fell asleep. I guess I expected more. I think I said it in another thread here, that I think the best parts of the movie were used for the previews.

Either that or I must be becoming numbed to fright or horror.

I thought it was very suspenseful. It scared my husband--he shrieked like a 6'3 bearded little girl

You may be right about the previews...I never saw them so couldn't say. I only watch about an hour of TV a week.

I never got around to watching The Thing by John Carpenter. Right around then was when I first read Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr., and I didn't really want to see how Carpenter might treat it. The story itself is excellent, Gehanna. You oughtta track it down if you can.

Worst horror movie? I recently disliked The Grudge. I didn't see any previews to ruin it, I just didn't much like it.

Worst horror book? Someone I know sang John Saul's praises so enthusiastically that I was eager to get my hands on a book of his. His Shadows disappointed me enough that I still can't bring myself to pick up anything by him. I've since heard from others that he bats about .500, so maybe I'll give him another shot some day when all my other must-reads have been taken care of.

People will probably kill me for this one, but my least fav probably has to be the original Chainsaw Massacre. I know. I know. Cult classic. But to me it was all chainsaw and screaming noise. No suspence. No pop ups worth anything. It was just desturbing to me. I prefer adrenalin pumping horror movies. Or good creep factor. I like to leave the theater excited. Not bothered and icked out. My favorite? Hard to say. I love the 1st nightmare. Still love the Halloweens. I have to say I really liked Scream when it first came out too. The new Chainsaw, I thought, was a huge improvement. Same thing for the new Amittyville. Oh, and I liked the grudge too. Not my fav, but I like these movies coming out of Japan. They have a different feel to them. Oh, and of course, The Ring. Good stuff!

Evil technology-technology driven peyote-flashbacking overlord turns small California townsfolk into something not quite human anymore with an eye towards conquering the world.

It felt more sci-fi to me, and that's what I didn't like so much. I like a very strong plausibility factor. But then, I'm picky.

Then they'll have to go through me to get to you, because I hated it, too. I also hated House of 1000 Corpses, Which was essentially the same story. BLEH!

I generally don't like Zombie movies of any kind. Night of the Living Dead (G. Romero) is classic, but everyone else just tries to copy him, and they fail miserably. OTOH, Shawn of the Dead was pretty awesome! I think I would actually buy that one.

I loved the first Nightmare, and the first couple Hellraiser movies, I thought they were wonderfully original concepts (as far as movies goes). And I know Alien is technically sci-fi, I loved the 2nd one best, and it was good horror, regardless. Mind, you, I loved the 1st one. It was very suspensful.

As for books. I honestly cannot remember the bad ones. I know I read some, but I think they were so excerable that I blocked them out of my memory.

Which one? the Japanese original or the Sarah Michelle Gellar remake? because remakes are always rubbish by comparison to the original. The original 'Ring' was alot more mysterious and disturbingly scary compared the US remake which relies on cheap thrills

I'm with you drgnlvr. I hated House of 1000 corpses too, it was basically chainsaw all over again. It sucked, which made me mad cuz I was anxious to see it at the time and Im a Rob Zombie / White Zombie fan music-wise, so what a dissapointment.

Probably the remake. It was in theaters this past fall.

The Japanese original was only in a few selected artsy movie houses in a few cities in the U.S., and it was in Japanese, subtitled.

So I'm betting it was the remake, which is still the one I liked.

I didn't like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre either, but I loved the remake.

The Grudge was stupid. I mean there were plenty of "scary" scenes, but none of them really made sense. They were smart not to put any characterization in it though, so it makes a good party movie.

Other bad movies are almost all of the recent ones, Ring Two, Boogeyman, Hide and Seek, The Village, etc.

I can see your point about Halloween if it were to come out now, but when it actually came out in what? 1978? I have to say I think it blew everything else away at the time. To me, all the horror movies of the 70's, or atleast the ones I've seen, were all just distrurbing. Not scary. Like Chainsaw. I think Halloween really brought in that creep factor. Like Micheal Myers still freaks me out! I love him! And its not because he creates a total splatter fest, its cuz I am really icked by the thought of someone just watching you when your unaware. Thats what he does. He could kill ya, he probably will kill ya, but first he's just going to lurk in the shadows and stare at you. Love it!

The Village! Urgh, what can we say about this one? the whole idea (SPOILER COMING UP) about the monster simulation thing was really bad.
