Hi all,

It has been SOOOOO quiet around here! *hears echo*

I've recently spent a little time at the Horror forum participating in a fun 100 word challenge where the prize is being published in an e-zine called Necrotic Tissue that pays 25.00 and gives you a t-shirt. Although getting that darn t-shirt would be cool, what is even better is the energy and activity those horror hounds have over there. They are motivated and supportive and funny and they really encourage each other. They do this in a few ways.

1) They have a great thread where the writers check in with goals and accomplishments, and a couple of AWers sort of moderate that thread, handing out encouragement and "discipline" when appropriate. It's fun but at the same time is serious about helping writers increase their productivity.

2) They issue regular challenges where the end result is producing a piece appropriate for publication to a certain market

3) They do fun things like threads where someone starts a story idea, and then the rest of them contribute to the story by turn.

So the bottom line is, I wanted to suggest that maybe we try some similar stuff here. The Historical forum used to be busy and fun some months ago. I realize many of us are working hard on our WIPs, but writing can be a lonely enterprise, and wouldn't it be nice to have like-minded individuals sharing and cheering each other on? And personally, I'd love to know what you all are up to these days with your writing.

So my proposal is the following:

How about we start a thread similar to this one over at Horror?

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86517

A few of us can volunteer to be the "encouragers" on this thread so that those who post get some feedback on their goals and accomplishments. I volunteer, but I'll be out of town with no internet access from August 15 - 23. Anyone else interested? We can figure out 'rules' that will work best for us as far as commitment and posting frequency.

Also, I know I tried talking you all into this a while back, but I'm going to try it again. The Historical Novel Society is having a short story contest along with Fish Publishing. Here's the link:

http://www.fishpublishing.com/writing-contests.php

The HNS comp is 5000 words or less, but there is also a short short Histories contest with max 300 words. Scroll down to see both contests. We still have until August 31 to get something ready to submit. I've got a 3800 word short and a 300 word short I'm going to submit. Is anyone else up for trying this too? Isn't it more fun to bite your nails if several others are doing it with you?

What do you all think?

I'd definitely be up for something like that goals and accomplishments/progress report thread.

I'm still plugging away at outlining WIP #2, but once I get to writing, I intend to take the "speed draft" approach, rather than the "try to get it right the first time, take three and a half years to write it, and still have to go back in for serious revisions" approach I took with TSOR, and it would be awesome to have some fellow writers to help keep me honest.

Afraid I wouldn't be able to really contribute to the challenge/fun threads...I barely have the time to write as it is...

I agree with you on the being silent, c.e., western is too. I'm not sure what the solution is since everyone is busy working on his or her own thing. I tried to drum up some interest in contests on the western forum but didn't get much action (other than my own).

I think that to have much activity and interest, the challenges pretty much ought to be for writing something new - in my opinion, people got a little burnt out on the same stories with different topics in the historical SYW before. That was one of the reasons I suggested the reversals - something different from what we'd been seeing.

I won't promise how active I'll be in any new venture - the two WIPs I'm working on now are contemporary - historical's pretty much put to bed for a while, but I am still working on some western stories (aha, the historical tie in). My two cents worth. Puma

Hi c.e.

I'm in! Finished my degree so I've a lot more time for personal writing these days.

I do still travel some for work, so will have a few pockets of time where I'll be on black out, but know beforehand.

Do flashing eyes come with the task? :D

C.E., good ideas.

I've been out of town for about half of last week and half of this week. I'll be back home Sunday. (Hopefully for a while.)

We can sure get something like that up & going. I don't know of a historical market that would do what the one for Horror does, but other than that, the others are definitely do-able.

Hi! I'm around, but am out of town for another three weeks or so (long, long holiday). I'm only on AW sporadically these days. Give me a few weeks after that to get my oldest settled into her first year at school, and I'll be game to get back into things.

I'm around too, back from a month in Australia/NZ and only now recovered from the inevitable bugs one picks up on long distance flights. . . it will soon be time to start work on lesson plans etc for the new semester, and I am still woefully behind with German language progress. Somehow there just isn't enough time in the days. But I usually manage a quick peek at AW most days.

Sorry everyone. Bush in Canada right now, rarely get to a computer. Then Sept I'm going home and have a house to renovate and 5000 trees to plant.

I've been missing the great discussions and excerpts from WIP's, etc. on this sub-forum.

One thing that I really enjoyed was the hundred word pieces - it was sort of a "capture a moment in history in a hundred words" kind of deal. They didn't take long to research and write, so it wouldn't take away a lot of time from people's WIPs. Maybe an AW-wide competition?

I'd love to see this sub-forum reinvigorated.

Don't know if I can commit for this August regarding the 5000 but I'd be willing to try the 300 and the round robin you suggested.

Bush?

It means I'm in a remote forested area - it's a Kiwi expression.

5000 trees. Yep. I'm going home to a small farm and must plant some cash crops, mainly fruit and nut trees with a little timber and a lot of firewood. My estate Doogs!

And it means whilst I do my daily two hours of writing I don't get chance to spend much time here.

I don't like skiting but in case the doubters want to be rude I have a Hist mystery short completed, next novel research notes nearly done. Sent a half dozen stories off to market. So whilst I cannot play I can work!

The encouraging thread sounds like fun, but I'm afraid the concept of writing anything in 5000, let alone 300, is entirely foreign to me--but I'll be happy to watch and poke and cheer for those who wish to participate.

Yes. Twas kidding around. The Biltmore grounds were planned by Frederick Law Olmstead (who also masterminded that obscure outdoor space, Central Park). Lots of trees.

Are you a Kiwi? My daughter and son-in-law are Kiwis.
Are you in NZ or Canada? (Don't reply if it's a secret)

Hi pdr,

So THAT'S how you get so many stories published! Good for you. Looks like you have an exciting and busy time ahead of you, but I hope you can check in once in a while and let us know what you're up to! It only takes a few seconds to give us an update. We're interested!

Euclid - I haven't read your story yet - I've just got a few minutes right now to write a few posts - but I wanted to let you know that you really should post any of your writing for which you'd like feedback in the Share Your Work forum. It is password protected - the password is VISTA - and that's where we put our work. We put it in a password protected forum to that Googling or search engines cannot bring up your work to the public, hence making your piece in effect already published and therefore not desirable to potential editors.

HOWEVER
- For some reason the Share Your Work forum has noted that the password protection is not working right now, so they're trying to fix that. If you want to potentially publish your piece, I'd take it down from here, and then repost it in SYW when the problem is fixed.

Does that make sense? And welcome! So glad to have you with us.

According to Medievalist, the problem with SYW is fixed (see post in main SYW forum). However, it apparently is going to take a little time for the pages that were spidered (her words) to disappear from Google. I know that as of a couple minutes ago, one of my contest entries is still coming up. I removed my post, but, as Bufty pointed out to me (and I also saw), it's still there from someone doing a line by line. That now is giving me some second thoughts about doing complete copy and pastes for line by lines. The original poster can't remove them, and in a situation like this, that's not good. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Puma

Hi Puma,

I have never heard of these sorts of spiders before. Yuck.

Yes, I see what you mean about line-by lines. If I'm the one who did it, I'd be happy to go and delete it for you. I can't remember if I cut and pasted your piece. Or maybe a mod can delete it if you can't reach the person who did?

I'm in over my head, here! Can someone explain:

a) How a posting in AW can be found using Google?
b) Why anyone would want to do this?
c) What is a line by line?

Hi Euclid - I'll answer the easy question first - line by line. Some critiques of posted work in SYW are copied exactly as they are and the critiquer then makes in line comments and suggestions - in color or using strike outs to show the original poster how the writing could be improved. Example:

I'm in over my head, why did you put in this comma? here! Can someone explain: thought preceding the colon should be complete, i.e., Can someone explain the following:

The other questions - posts in AW that are not in the password protected forums can be found by Google (and other search engines) at any time - like this thread for example. That's not all a bad thing. I first found AW by doing a Google search for the agent who had asked for a partial and the AW Bewares and Background checks came up. That was useful information for me and hopefully it was a benefit to AW since I've been here now for over two years.

The problems arise if someone finds a posted piece of work and either submits them as their own, puts them on a blog (there've been some recent posts in roundtable about that happening with work posted on another forum), creates fan-fic for the original post, etc. Hope that helps explain it for you. Puma
