You know there is really no great way to title this post without is sounding pornish....which is also probably the reason I have had trouble finding agents who look for this sort of thing.

Does anyone know of any agents who represent teen fantasy novels centered around gay or lesbian characters? (yeah, just try googling teen lesbian fantasy) As a lesbian it seems like any books for teens about this sort of thing are all coming out stories, which, while good reads, get boring once you are passed that place! When I was a teen I always wanted novels in the genre I liked that were about characters I could relate to.

So any ideas? If there is a thread anywhere on here that this should be, or already has been answered feel free to toss me that way, thanks!

Don't look so much for an agent who represents queer novels--look for one who does YA.

And no, you're not the only writer. There are others, though as is typical, there are more writing about gay teens than lesbians, in terms of the POV/protagonists.

I don't actually think it's pornish at all. Like Medievalist says, look for YA agents. You don't even have to mention your character is gay unless it's pivotal to the story. In that I don't necessarily point out that my characters (who are) are straight. :)

ETA- okay, thinking about the googling thing actually clues me in to the porn. :D

I agree with Medievalist and Bethany. Don't look for agents that do gay/lesbian, just go for YA agents. Some of them might not put down that they're interested in queer themes when they are still open to it.

In any case, if you go to agentyquery.com and click "Full Search" to the left, you can click Young Adult and Gay & Lesbian as your search criteria and you'll get three pages of agents who actively say they're looking for similar things.

Good luck! You should definitely start getting some interest. Since a lot of LGBT teens are coming out in early high school, or even before, there's more of a demand for gay&lesbian books that aren't about coming out and just about life. It's definitely a growing market.

I wanted to clarify my porn comment. (cause I was posting in a hurry earlier). It just kinda bothered me cause the other day we were talking about a friend (teacher) who came out, and all these holier than thou folks were like, I don't know why He has to tell people about his sex life. And it really pissed me off because that's not telling people about his sex life, it's telling his orientation, and I don't see how that is like a window into his bedroom, if you know what I mean. Anyway this was just a few days ago, and I connected it with your porn comment, and, that is how my brain works, sad really.

Good luck with your manuscript. Lots of GLBT stuff coming out these days!

I'm writing a YA fantasy where my MC happens to be gay. Her orientation is connected to a subplot, but is not the main drive of the story. When it's ready to do the rounds, I'm planning on querying agents interested in YA. I've been hearing on the grapevine that they're interested in YA gay/lesbian novels where coming out isn't the sole focus of the plot.

As reenkam said, you can also do a full search on agentquery.com with YA and gay and lesbian, and see what comes up. Good luck! :)

I will reiterate what most of the posters have said here ,but you perhaps should just write-YA as a fine start as you are a teenager. Your own personal sexual orientation should not influence your goals as a writer. I am also gay and have come to the conclusion of who cares!

I would suggest you simply write the best novel you can, do all the things necessary to make it as good as it can be and simply write from the heart. Be proud of yourself and your characters, lesbian or not, mean, loving, whatever they may be. Write and find out about your life and theirs. Then you submit your work to the proper agents or small publishers as a work and not specifically about lesbianism or lesbian life unless of course it strictly is about that, coming out within the framework of a book which is interesting even to non gays of the world. It may seem simple or corny to have to state who you are within your work but it is nevertheless the truth. Be strong and stand up for yourself and the rest will follow.

I have an interest in writing about diversity in fiction. I haven't tried gay and lesbian characters but I have experimented some with multicultural characters and characters with disabilities. When I was researching publishers, there are some that are specificially looking for particular topics (including a few that mentioned homosexuality). I think the most important thing is you have a good story to tell (and as an above poster said) one that would also appeal to the mainstream/general population.

e.g. somebody could be lesbian but they may also have an interest in restoring old cars, have a crummy job selling Christmas trees where people keep brining back trees they chopped down from the forest looking for refunds (and on and on)...

Basically, the story should be about the person and homosexuality is only one part of them.

Thanks for everyone's advice! I will certainly go check the agent query thing... I am not looking for someone who is only interested in that stuff, just looking for people who would perhaps be more open to it than others. It isn't that the fact that my characters are lesbians is the key to the story, it just happens to be true...I have written a couple books with gay characters and it is always something that is established before the story starts.

It isn't that writing about lesbians was ever a goal of mine, its just that those are the characters I can more relate to when I write them..they are the stories that I want to read. When I have looked for books like what I write I can't find any that are both well written, and not spilling over with sex.

Once again thanks for all the help guys!
