(I'm not sure of the best place to post this - I didn't think it quite fit any of the categories for the Beta Readers board. I hope Roundtable is appropriate.)
For me, a word war is when two or more people gather on-line and decide to work on their own stories for a set amount of time; for example, the next 45 minutes. The work can be writing, or editing, or outlining, or research, or freewriting, or anything you want to do. At the end of the decided time, they compare progress. The comparison is simply for motivational purposes: the main aim is to provide each other with a bit of virtual company and encouragement while writing.
After the word war is over, another can start, for however long the participants wish. I am not imagining any set time of day for these wars, or any obligation for anyone to log on and participate. What I was hoping was that there would be a few people here who might like to take part, and if we were on-line at the same time, a quick query regarding whether another person wanted to war could be sent, and it could go ahead.
I'm not sure what would be the best way to do this. The chat room is an option, although it wouldn't be much fun for the people in there who were not warring. Another option is via instant messaging. I'm happy to PM my MSN id to anyone who would like to try this. Again, there would be no obligation at any time. If anyone has any suggestions for a good way to do this, I'd love to hear them.
I have found word wars to be great for getting past blocks on a story, or just for getting something written every day. Posting your word count every ten minutes or so, or every time you write another 100 words, say, can be very motivating. Cheering each other on is another nice aspect of word wars. Even if you don't get many words written, it's more than you had at the start of the war. Everyone wins!
