I took the liberty of reading other newbie boards before posting, and it looks like most of us are lurkers for a bit before joining. In some ways it made me feel more conforable, but as always I'm still a bit nervous to make my first post -- or post at all really!

Well, a bit about myself: I'm just getting started into the art of writing, discovering my style and other craft basics, but have been playing with plot ideas for quite a few years. I'm pretty young, but I think that I will have some potential after I practice more. In the meantime, short shories and maybe a rough draft of a full novel are my goals.

It's a little awkward being so new and in a board filled with professionals. Most of the advise I can give will be in personal opinions and maybe world development. This pertains to fantasy as well as the real world, since I know a lot about small towns from growing up in a village.

Oh right, I forgot to mention my genres. Well, I have the most fun with fantasy -- alternate universe or modern -- but I have ideas for others.

It's feels great to be a part already, even if it means I just have a username while lurking. =)

Welcome aboard and have fun! There's a ton of great information here so don't be afraid to just lurk, if you need to.

Yes, I'm the type who needs to do research before jumping in. When I said I was playing around with plots for a few years, I mean about four years with an idea on the backburner as you call it.

In any case, thanks for the welcome feeling. I looked around, but I didn't see any etiquette on how long I should wait / how many posts I should make before helping myself to the 'Share your Work' forum. Any opinions on that?

PS: My popcorn? I like mine swimming in melted butter. Forget the caleries, I eat for the taste.

Hi. :) I noticed your post as I just replied to another post you'd replied to before me and saw that you were a fantasy writer from Michigan too, ha. I'm not seeking publication, so I feel pretty awkward myself hanging out on a message board where that's the primary goal of most people...I'm likely to share just opinions and such too.

Another fantasy writer from Michigan? What are the chances!

I'll work on sharing opinions and getting my post count up before getting into the 'Share Your Work' area. I went back a ways and read that a lot of people aren't fond of reviewing when the author is in the single digits of posts. I'm reading a ton of articles here, and thanks to it I finally have an idea for the beginning of one story. Time to start on a first draft. . . again! I never threw my old ones away, but to put it simply I'm a perfectionist and they didn't live up to my standards. Time to employ the BIC method.

Thanks again for all the welcomes!

Hi Zodiea, welcome to, well, participation.

While it's never too late to write, I'd agree with John that earlier is better. Looking forward to read your stuff in SYW.
