scribbling some stuff for Inktip, gonna open an account there, was just trawling for people's thoughts on synopses. exactly how much do you give away of twists/endings in a situation like this : is this place more of a tempt/tease place rather than a fully detailed synop you'd send on a private query? i just ask cos the example they give on the page seems to whitter on about bits then just goes "the hero wins in the end" type of thing.
also, when you all write a synop, do you ever refer it to other films, like "in the tradition of 'HEAT' and '16 Blocks'" or such like, just to give a further flavour as to what the script's like?

TIA.

I leave a synopsis that is longer than a 'thumbnail' but shorter than a 'full synopis'. They should get a sense of each act, where it goes and who the characters are. If there is a twist ending, I like to let them know it turns out fine, but not HOW it twists. "In a twist ending, Bob finds out that his love for Sheila is against the law."

As for high-concept pitches "West Side Story meets Jaws" or 'in the tradition of XYZ" - I generally place those in the logline section.

I like to use each element to lead the reader deeper. The Logline should make them click on the synopsis. The synopsis should make them download or request the script. Since most shoppers start with the logline, it has to be strong.

i agree the logline has to be strong just to get them to read the synopsis.

feel free to run it by us to critique it in the "share your work" section. objective eyes on your writing can do so much good.

for inktip - i suggest 3 short paragraphs that represent your 3 acts. and b/c they ask so many questions about the elements (you'll see when you start submitting what i'm talking about) in your script there is no need to suggest it's like this flick or that flick.
